An old lady I visit (age 84) with my volunteer work is called mummy by her four children, all girls and aged 60 down to 53.

This sounds so wrong. At their age it surely should be mum or one of its dialectic derivatives - mam, mem, murm - I am keeping away from ma, mammy, mama, which are heard a lot less nowadays, and of course, mom.

Mummy, when said by an adult just sounds so twee, well that's what me mem said.

I'm with you on the mummy thing, it sounds ridiculous coming from anyone over the age of five.

It's Mom around here though, it's a Birmingham/Black Country/South Staffs thing. We get very annoyed by people assuming we're trying to Americanise 'Mum' but we're not, it's just how it is.

Sorry folks, but Becky and Harry call me Mummy sometimes Maybe it's a regional thing They both have quite posh Surrey accents and it doesn't sound odd coming from them somehow Don't blame me, they get the posh from their dad, and his family

I feel a bit the same as you Saundra, in that I'm not over-comfortable when DiL calls me by my first name. I guess I'm just not used to be addressed that way by "the younger generation". But what should she call me? .....

Master O often calls Mrs O "Mummy" but it's usually when he's larking about.
