Anyone familiar with Yorkshire

We are looking at Yorkshire for a weeks holiday in June. As we like to be near the coast I am looking at Filey. Any thoughts, suggestions, do's or don't's, gratefully received

I love Whitby! Don't know Filey at all.

Filey is small just a bay
Not far from Scarborough which is bigger loads of fish shops
Whitby is steep dracula birth place but easy to get York harragott and the dales and north Yorkshire railway but like every where in uk you need the weather

I know I wouldn’t like Scarborough, too big for me. I wasn’t overly keen on Whitby for the same reason plus it was the end of season and it was all a bit grubby. Overflowing rubbish bins etc.

Well filey is no better shell get the map out and look else where
If you have been up this way before stick to Cornwall or the gower which is lovely but dear good luck

Saundra is right, you do need the weather. I went to Filey a couple of years since and liked it. It is small but has a nice beach and public gardens. Scarborough is bigger but OK. Two nice beaches. The last time I went to Bridlington it was looking a bit run down but again, a nice sandy beach and a nice prom on the front.
Whitby is nice, good beach but it is getting very popular. There are lovely walks up the West Cliff. Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay and Runswick Bay are all smaller, all have good beaches and all three have very steep hills down to the beach!
Have you considered taking a cottage a little inland from Whitby and using that as a base to explore, Shell? They are all worth a visit.

Cromwell like everything on this coast it needs the weather yes Bridlington is really struggling it's full of empty shops but a lovely beach and harbour lovely for kiddies and it's flat if you have your own car it's best just to rent a cottage near the dales and just visit places and pray for sunshine

Shell, unfortunately for those of us not too good on our pins the North Yorks coast from Staithes down to Flamborough can be a bit too hilly. Don't get me wrong, the places mentioned are quaint and well worth a look, especially Runswick and Robind Hood's bays, but you have to park up and walk down... and back up again.

Bridlington and down the Holderness coast is much flatter, but time and the tides have really made their mark - literally. Erosion has washed away a lot of the shallow cliffs and left the beaches somewhat of a muddy mess.

We had a caravan at Hornsea and spent many a brilliant summer there and there was a time when I would have said "go, get there, enjoy yourselves!". I am not sure that I could say the same today.

Ho I agree Frank Hornsea/withernsea are ok but some of the cliffs are disappearing fast and spurnpoint

The problem for us is, living in the middle of England the sea is at least 2 and half hours away so we love to see the sea on holiday.

We also go self catering, I really dont like hotels or B&B's

We have decided to bite the bullet and do something we thought we would leave until we retired, but no we are doing it now and we are off to Scotland
