South Yorkshire is not all bad

Postby cromwell » 06 Apr 2018, 12:34

This I know because I've seen quite a lot of it recently. I joined a shooting club in S Yorks and last week followed a friend there in the car. No problem until I came to go home. I live near Wakefield, the club is south of me, near Rotherham. So when it comes to going home, I need to head north on the M18, right?

Wrong. I need to head south, back to the M1, then north. Going home the way I did (M18, M62) is about 52 miles as opposed to 35 going the correct way M18, M1.

So yesterday I went there on my own. South on the M1, take the M18 turn off then off at junction 1.

What can possibly go wrong? Well, if your brain mixes up junction 1 and junction 3 of the M18, quite a lot. Trying to get back on course I visited lovely villages like Wadworth and Loversall, places like Tickhill, Bawtry (twice), Maltby, Austerfield and bizarrely, Doncaster Robin Hood airport.

A thirty five mile journey turned into a seventy five mile journey...

Never mind, it was a lovely day for a drive! :D

(and I did get there in the end)

 I do sympathise, Crommers. I have that T-shirt as well.

Last season, I visited Chard rugby club. The ground's off the High Street, bottom end of town. No problem driving there and back.

About a month later, I returned to Chard to visit the soccer club. The ground is in the north west suburbs, top of the town. Found it OK, but for the return journey, I thought I'd be clever and find a short-cut out the back of town, direct to Ilminster and the A303. Big mistake ... I got totally disorientated on winding country roads and only realised I'd gone wrong when I passed a sign saying I was 4 miles from Taunton .... :D

You and my old Uncle Bill are not safe to be let out the front gate.

We had gone to Guernsey and the hotel suggested a trip to L'Ancresse bay. We all piled into the van and off we went up the coast. We then took a LEFT turn and got the the bay where we had a lovely day.

The return journey semed a lot longer but eventually we saw St Peter Port and the road took us back to the coast. We turned LEFT to get to L'Ancresse so we had to turn RIGHT, didn't we? Bill was sure - LEFT cancels out RIGHT, of course it does.

After some time driving around St Martin Bill was eventually persuaded to ask for directions. As we are going down this road back to St Peter Port we come to the junction on our left where Bill turned us RIGHT. On a slight bend about 150 yards further on there was the hotel!

So close Bill, oh so close.
