our council are considering making us pay a yearly charge to empty brown bin(cardboard garden waste) and only collecting green bin rubbish ever fortnight our blue bin we put glass in as well plus empty biscuit tins very usefull after xmas
I am a bit of a greeny on a lot of things whereas a lot of people are only passive about it most of the time, and for that reason these things need to work on the KISS principle. All these multi bags and bins make for complications.
Leeds once tried split bins with a divider. Organic one side, basic rubbish the other, we also had the green bins. What they found was that people put the wrong stuff in the wrong side. Instead of getting all agitated and throwing out fines they went with the flow. Now everything is sorted at the depot instead of at source.
It is apparently more efficient to get it right by sorting it in-house than have loads of different collections and find that a few people getting it wrong ruin the whole shebang.
We have four bins. A green one for food waste and garden waste. A brown one for cans bottles and plastic A blue one for paper and cardboard. This includes the drink cartons. Anything else goes in a black bin. We are given a calender which shows when each bin is emptied. Tomorow, Wednesday it is the green and brown one. The system seems to work well even during holiday periods such as Christmas.
