Damned Lies
Statistics

And then there are politically fuelled statements.

\what am I talking about? Well I thought I'd read the Oxford Mail article that trumpets: Oxford University diversity figures trigger backlash

OXFORD University has been criticised after publishing figures showing 'glacial' progress in admitting students from diverse backgrounds.
More than a quarter of colleges did not admit a single black British student each year between 2015 and 2017.
Eight colleges - Corpus Christi, Balliol, Exeter, Jesus, Magdalen, New, University and Worcester - admitted two or less black students between 2015 and 2017, the University says.

How disgraceful.

The new report, which will now be published annually following pressure from Labour MP David Lammy - who has been a strong critic of diversity at the University - covers five admission years, from 2013 - 2017.

Oh very good then. We should see how bad they are.

Over the period, it shows that:
The proportion of students from state schools rose from 56.8 per cent to 58.2 per cent.
The proportion identifying as Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) rose from 13.9 per cent per cent to 17.9 per cent.

The list goes on but let's cap it there and go on to.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Mr Lammy described progress at the institution as 'glacial' and said the University was 'failing badly'.

Does he now. Glacial and "failing badly"

He goes on to say:

"Oxford is still a bastion of white, middle class, southern privilege.
"You are twice as likely to get in if you are white than black.

It's time to stop there and actually check his facts. We have the facts because we did a census in 2011 which tells us the Demography of the UK.

So let us see. In 2011:

White 87.17%
Asian or British Asian 6.92%
Black or British Black 1.98%

Now Oxford do not actually break down into Black and other ethnicities. However the reality is this.

If you are white your chances, against ethnicity are less than 1:1 because whites are 87% of the population and white students at Oxford make up 82%. Not only that but Oxford takes in white international students.

If you are BME your chances of getting in are >2:1 based on the ethnicity balance of the UK. Where BME makes 8.9% of the population and has 17.9% representation at Oxford.

so not only is the Labour MP wrong he is being racist against white people by claiming that Whites are disadvantaging Blacks when exactly the opposite is the case. In the same proportion. Which makes him wrong by 400%

Even more is that BME in the UK increased by 40% in the decade between 2001 and 2011, yet BME increased by 28% in Oxford in the last 5 years. Making the disparity even worse than it already was.

I know there a lot of Labour MP's who are complete dicks who's political ideology stinks, but why the hell doesn't someone with a bit of moral backbone stand up and call them for the charlatans they are????

Again, clearly predicted in a famous speech; yet demonised.

I don't know what all the fuss is about.

It's about time we closed down all the universities . I don't believe we really need them.
There are other proven methods of training for any particular ocupation, that could be expanded, and which,
I am sure, would be more effective.

Let's get rid of them, I say, together with the House of Lords.

Indeed, Suff.

The Biased Broadcasting Corporation's News reports today predictably completely lambasted the infamy of Oxford University - whilst the above statistic merely got a two second mention as a throwaway comment ……. blink and you would have missed it.

I tried to read a couple of articles and listen to some interviews on the subject and came to the same conclusion as Suff.

Everything was PC brigade approved touchy-feely, blacks are oppressed by the whiter man, agendas. Yes the stats were given/mentioned, but never analysed. Even Oxford University was 'persuaded' to offer profuse apologies.

Oxford University! You know the place. Home to some of the greatest mathematical minds on the planet, who know statistics and information inside out, cowed into submission. Where was the robust explanation and defence of the numbers?

Oh, I forgot, such things are not allowed.

I am also with Aggers. The country had a more relevant and suitably skilled workforce in the days of trades colleges and polytechnics, and all trained up at a fraction of the cost of modern universities.

In my day only the very best students got a place at University. There were other opportunities then for most of us, i.e. nursing, secretarial college, etc. These were good openings as there was always the chance of progression and promotion. There seemed to be plenty of apprenticeships available, again with good prospects. Not forgetting a small wage was paid whilst training on the job. Beats coming out of Uni with no job and a huge debt to contend with.

The re-badging of PolyTech's into Universities needed a change of tack for the Government. After all if these "uNiversities" didn't have a large enough intake they could not show that they were prime contenders for International students. So we get "uNiversity" for everyone. It has been extremely successful for sucking in money Internationally. But at the cost of sucking billions out of UK students who will never see the benefit of their shiny new "degree".

Back in 1996 I was in Brussels in a McDonalds burning a few hours over the weekend. No internet available in those days. When I heard a bunch of Brits "talking" at a volume I could hear 5 tables away. It appeared, from the talk, that they had just passed their degree's and were in Brussels for the weekend to celebrate.

One of them was expounding, at a volume which made me wince, about how they were now "One of the Top 25% of the UK". Which raised a wry smile.

Oh and they were all Geordies and WIM's. WIM's you say? White Indigenous Majority.

I wonder how that conversation would play out today?

"Now we have passed our Degree's we are one of the Top 100% of the UK and we only paid £27k for the pleasure".
