Lissie, if you are talking about Windows 10 you have my deepest sympathy.

I suspect that your "new" laptop was a model sat on the shelf for some time with an earlier version of W10 installed. As soon as you connected to the Internet it spoke to Microsoft and between them they decided to "update" you to the latest and very considerable revamp of W10. So on it goes for hours and hours and then nothing works.

My laptop is getting on for seven years old and when it did it to me it took till the end of time, and then some, to get it working again.

Fingers crossed that your new working version stays that way.

You have got it in one Frank!! It happened just as you described.
I even took the first one back to Factory Settings but it still wasn't right.
This one seems ok so far.
Hope you get on ok without too much pain and take care xxx
