I know it is hot, but give us a break.

The BBC, the Met Office, the Environment agency and "scientists" are throwing out warnings like confetti.

The latest is that there could be 7,000 heat-related deaths every year in the UK by 2050 if the government doesn't act quickly. Is that 7,000 over and above what is 'normal'? What can the government do - turn the sun off?

How do other places where summer temperatures in the 30ºC range cope? Do they keel over in their droves and just accept it. Do they get media details on how to apply sunscreen correctly, as we did the other day. Are they warned to close their blinds to keep the sun out and to open as many windows as possible to get a breeze through the house?

We are being treated as though a few hot(ish) weeks are Armageddon and that we have the knowledge of a two year old in how to cope.

It is indeed Vic. We had Mary Creagh MP on the TV this dinnertime saying that the government "should be doing more".
More what? More stating the obvious?
In other news, going out when it's raining could result in getting wet!

… and next year, it'll be a dull wet summer, and everyone will be moaning again! :D

I know it's stupid and it is nanny state and they sound like a bunch of teachers lecturing children. I would be saying exactly the same thing if not for one thing.

In the Aquitaine area of France, in 2003, in August, the French went on holiday. As they do every year. They left behind their parents and grandparents as they did every year.

2003 was punishing. The summer was right on top of a monster solar maximum, the weather was clear, extremely hot and, worst of all, it did not cool at night. Night time temps were at 29C well into 3am.

The final toll was 15,000 to 19,000 dead in August alone. Total heat prostration, the skeleton holiday services could not keep up and the old people had no idea how to cool themselves off.

There are good pieces of advice to give. But I almost never see them. Open windows, yes, great, but not when it's 35C outside and 25C inside. That is just damned stupid. Open them at night, all night. You can get over bug bites with cream, heat prostration is a lot worse. Shut the things in the morning and keep the heat out. Blinds, yes, blackout if you can manage it. White blackout, not black, because it reflects heat and does not transmit it into the room.

Take a shower, don't towel off, stand in front of the fan, soaking wet, till the water dries. Repeat until cool enough.

Drink water. Still water. Not coke, absolutely not beer or spirits and not fizzy drinks.

When you go to the loo have a look at the urine. If it is very dark and smelly, drink still water until it becomes clear again.

Wear sandals if you can. Go to work (as I did today) with comfortable clothes for travelling home. I packed shorts and a sleeveless sports shirt for the return journey, I was already wearing sandals. Without socks please.

If you absolutely insist in going out in the middle of the day and blasting yourself with sun, drink water and Take 3 Time the normal Salt intake you normally have. Sweat is salty, lick it and see.

Seen any of that advice around recently???

I doubt it.

But with another month of pretty hot weather forecast to remain, it is about time we British wised up a bit about how to survive in a hot climate. Spending 2 weeks in Magaluf, getting drunk and spending all day sleeping it off is not a template for living and working in these temperatures.

Forgot to mention, it was 38C at home today. Mrs S says the thermometers in the garden were reporting ambient temps of 50C in the locked in areas.

Tomorrow I will be in the semi interred above ground pool. I have to put in a ton of sand and a new liner. Saturday I will be working on the pool, the filter pump and the piping all day.

Not something I'm looking forward to. Sadly it takes 2 days to fill the pool. It is 8m x 4.5m x 1.32m deep. Otherwise I would be in it, 18c water or not..

Only the British..... and the Germans,

Suff, I kid you not, the other day the BBC ran an article about sunscreen / lotion. It had a video showing us how to do it properly: shake bottle; squeeze into palm of hand; apply with fingertips. You get the idea.

Are we idiots, or are we just being treated like idiots?

Some people are idiots WM, but we are all being treated like idiots.

Suff's advice is good and I already follow most of it. It's a good tip about the shower though, I didn't know that one.

The latest from the BBC main evening news.

If you are in a slow moving car or stuck in a jam.... wait for it.... wind the windows down to let the air circulate.

OK, to be fair, the woman was talking about the things motorists should do such as oil check, tyre check, coolant level, washer bottle, because even though most car owners should know these things many never bother, so not totally nanny. Oh, and carry plenty of drinking water.
