A tale of woe

Postby JanB » 01 Oct 2018, 12:17

Drove to Castro Verde, walked up to the bank, put card in to order cheques.

It kept it

Apparently, it ran out yesterday

Went into the bank and spoke to the manager, who checked and said that new cards had been sent on 30 August. He showed me the screen, so it wasn't a fib. But, I said, you still have our old address

Although we'd filled in forms - twice - nothing had been done   Could you not go and get them, he asked? Nope we said. We don't have a key for the post box and I doubt if they'd still be there anyway.

So he cancelled them both and I've got a new card coming, hopefully within a week. We decided that Grumpy doesn't need one, well, he never uses it anyway   That will save us about 10 euros a year.

Asked if we could either have cheques, cash from our account. Nope. As the card we have is out of date and as we can't locate the now cancelled new cards, nothing until it arrives

He's very kindly ordered the cheques for us and will call me when the card arrives at the branch. Best it goes there, rather than getting lost.

Grumpy very unhappy with me for not noticing - but as I explained, if I'd had a new card, I would have known that the old was was about to be replaced.

I then had to go and explain to the lady in the shop, that we couldn't pay for the wardrobe    for another week. Maybe Friday. She wasn't very happy, kept asking why the bank hadn't given me a new card. I tried about 4 times, to explain that it was lost in the post.

Fortunatley, we have some cash at home, so that will keep us going for a few days anyway.

So always check the date on your debit card 8-) 8-)

It's a real nuisance isn't it...John had this the other year, he'd changed the address when we moved here, had a card delivered here when his old one expired and then for some reason the bank's system reverted to using our old address so his next new card went there.
Like you he didn't notice the date until it was refused in a shop due to the fact that it had expired!

I just double checked mine and still OK for now...

but thinking of contacting the bank and requesting non-contactless replacements. It's super easy and convenient but I worry should I lose a card (not that it's ever happened) that it's going to be so easy for anyone to use the card

hmmmm :?

Tough luck, Jan, it's such a palaver with the banks, isn't it?

I've started to use contactless lately as my credit card suddenly stopped working in chip/pin machines, but was OK using contactless. Strange. But I agree there is that worry about losing such cards, and mobile phones also.

I love the fact you can just 'wave' your card over the debit machine and it's paid for. No need to even insert your card (as long as it's under 30 euros.)

Thanks anyway for the reminder Jan....I was paying for flights only just 2 days ago and noticed my expiry date was 1/19.

Now have a note on the kitchen calendar to go into the bank and request a new card.

And there lies another thing re banks......I can't remember the last time I actually went into the bank as everything can be done now on the ATM outside.

Technology a go-go.  :cute:
