I had wondered about that as there are now two in our village for public use, one outside the school on our estate and one outside the community centre. I know you have to get a code from an operator to access the machine but I'd wondered what happened after that, once you had to use it.

absolutely Osc When you put the pads on it detects a heart beat or not and says either shock or dont shock. They are idiot proof

This is true, my BiL the paramedic mentioned it once. He also said there is nothing to lose by having a go, as cardiac arrest is death of you don't.
