Get the woolies out.

Postby Workingman » 16 Nov 2018, 07:19

A thing called the Siberian Blocking High, or in modern terms The Beast from the East, is about to hit. It currently stretches from the Pacific, across northern Asia, to Scandinavia.

Forecasters are predicting this could be with us, on and off, for about six weeks. That would be six weeks of near or below freezing temps - day and night. It would be a very dry period leading up to the snow season of late December to March; and we do not do well with snow.

You have been warned!

Oh Blimey, that's all we need. I knew I should have bought that wood burner.

We have two Crommers :D

One is in a huge fireplace in the lounge bit. We've had some plate thingy put up where the chimney narrows, to stop wind coming down and heat going out.

The other is free standing flat top, with the pipe going out into the roof.

We like to have the one in the lounge lit when it's not too cold, cos we feel cosy ;) . When it's a little colder, we'll light the other one and cook on it. Stews and stuff.

When it's really cold, we'll light both of them and that's all the heating we have.

Jan, your system is the best.

The fire for 'cosy' and then the stove doubles up as a heater and cooker.

Who needs a slow cooker, Remoska, microwave, pressure cooker?

Cromwell, pick her brains. :( :D :D

It was 19C in France this week, sadly I was here in London.

Crommers, we have something like this in the dining room. It is connected to one cast iron radiator in the living room and we use that for when it is cool but not cold. That one is quite large and I expect it can run most of the radiators for a house. However the company which sold ours on ebay is not selling now.

For the rest of the house it is the 32kw log burning stove in the garage. Incredibly effective but when it is really below 0c you can't keep the house warm all night as the wood always burns out and to try and bank it up overheats the boiler.

Today, for me, it is pellet burner all the way. We are going to replace the main wood burning stove with a pellet burner some time in the next year. This will give us full control over the heating and up to two weeks of running on one hopper fill. For the new games room I'm toying with a pellet burning, in room, stove with a back boiler and putting in radiators to my new office, Mrs S' sewing room, our bedroom/en suite bathroom/dressing room and our separate sitting room. Of course we'll have to finish/start those rooms before it's all ready to use.

Get one of these. Back boiler - the lot.

I grew up with a similar range and we had a scullery before dad did his DIY revamp and tuned it into a kitchenette. We got a Cannon gas miser fire in the living room. Bliss. :D :D :D

WM,
In the house one of my grandmothers lived in had a similar range. The oven was on the left with boiler on the right with a tap to get hot water.
The house has been demolished and the new house built on the land.
