A new estate of about 400 homes is being built this side of Bramhope and access will be via a new roundabout, so the main road, the A660, between Leeds and Otley will be shut for three weeks from next weekend. No problems, the signs telling of the long diversion have been up for a month - No entry to Bramhope 25 Oct - 18 Nov Long Diversion - but the diversion arrow sign is covered up till ready.

Today I got an email from the councillor to say the diversion has changed because part of it already being closed for the laying of new gas mains. This work has been going on for weeks and will not end till mid December according to the signs. Sooo part of the new diversion will go through a residential estate but some of it is unsuitable to HGVs so they will be further diverted and rejoin the diversion to the old diversion later on. It's all good fun. To get from one side of the roadworks to the other via the diversion is 9km.

It looks as though some Highways Dept wonk has been on the map and just traced out the shortest route without checking whether all the roads were open. Oops!

The criteria down here seems to be that if an A-road is closed for any reason, diversions can only be signposted via other A- or major B-roads in the area. So when they are resurfacing the main A303 West Country route (a task seemingly not unlike painting the Forth Bridge), the posted diversions - for example Wincanton to East Knoyle - can, once you've meandered through Gillingham and Shaftesbury, turn a 10 mile journey into 23 miles!

Diversions baffle me.
You go past one of those little yellow signs. "Diversion" and an arrow. Diversion from where? From what? a diversion to where?
I just ignore them!

You would have fun over here! Quite often, they forget to take down one or two diversion signs so you tootle merrily along the original route saying “I wonder what that diversion is for”
