Agree re the carrier bag thing - only this morning was I frantically looking for something to use as a bin bag as I'd run out of the Sainsbury's bags.... and same as everyone else; now - rather than reusing something - I will need to buy bin liners and that's even worse because most of the shopping bags at least are some form of biodegradable whereas the bin liners aren't.

It is Osc. Admittedly I don't HAVE to do it, as even with Brexit I would have a right to remain etc; but my life is here now - I've paid more in the UK in taxes etc that I don't want to in any way form or shape ever risk a cut in pension payout etc because at some point some clever clogg decides to impost a higher tax on foreign passport holders. I know they shouldn't and the likelihood of it happening is slim to none but still - it's my one irrational fear. The UK is my home so may as well get the UK Citizenship and passport and then also have the right to vote ;-) And the only reason I need to get a crack on is because Germany doesn't allow dual passports unless both are EU passports. So once the UK has left the EU I need to apply for a permit to hold both and that again costs money. It's all a money making scam it really is.... So far I had to pay £80 for my Indefinitely Leave to Remain; £50 for the "Life in the UK" test and then another £150 for my English language test - a 10 minute verbal test to confirm that I can speak English. Then it's the £1350 for the naturlisation, then another £100 or so for the citizen ceremony and then a final £80 for the passport - so all in all not the cheapest; but worth it in the long run :D

Aldi have impressed me with their bags, the normal carriers at the checkout (which I think are 6p) are made of compostable material.

Ria, I'm shaking my head at you having to do a language test; you speak better and clearer English than many people who have English as their first language.

LOL Jo - I did have a giggle about it at the time... but one does what one has to :D

But it was quite astounding at just how poor the English of some of the people that were there was. They barely managed to string two words together - so in a way you can't blame the government making the language test part of the naturalisation process. I'm a very firm believer that if you move to a country you need to learn the local language and if you can't be bothered (and I know some people learn languages easier than others - but some don't even try!) then you shouldn't be allowed to apply for citizenship.
