I have just been to Asda and was near the reduced shelf when an assistant came up to re-price some goods. There were some Chinese meals reduced from the original £3.50 to £2.77, so not such a big saving. But the new stickers just printed by the assistant and stuck over the old reduced stickers now said 10p - the sell by date is today so I picked up five, one for tea and the rest for the freezer.

When I got to the till the meals would not scan, they kept coming up as £2.07 so I called a supervisor. He toddled off to check and returned to tell me that the pricing was a mistake and that they should be £2/07 and that the stickers would be changed. They are all like Borgs now so he spoke to someone via his earpiece microphone dongle wotsit.

Anyway I used to own a shop so we got into a conversation about Asda's 'invitation to treat' (the ticket price) and that I accepted it was a mistake so I would up my 'consideration' (an offer to trade) to 30p as a gesture of goodwill. He just laughed and put them through manually at 10p, then with a wink he put his finger to his lips to indicate that I should say nowt.

Agree about making a fuss politely and well done you - that is a bargain! But have to ask... I thought it was law that whatever was on the ticket was final price? Just being curious

A common misconception, Ria. Many of us do not realise is that the ticket price is only an 'offer' it is not fixed. It can be raised or lowered at any time. A shop can also refuse to sell anything to anyone without giving a reason. It would be economic suicide to do either, but it is the law.
