Motorists worried about getting an MOT because of the coronavirus crisis, have been handed a six-month reprieve.
The government has granted car owners a six-month exemption from MOT testing.
However, it won't come in until Monday 30 March which means vehicles due an MOT before then must still take it.
The exemption "will enable vital services such as deliveries to continue, frontline workers to get to work, and people get essential food and medicine," the government said.
The exemption will apply to cars, motorcycles and vans, but the government warned that vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition.
Garages will remain open for essential repair work while drivers will face prosecution if they're caught driving unsafe vehicles.
"We must ensure those on the frontline of helping the nation combat COVID19 are able to do so," said Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.
"Safety is key, which is why garages will remain open for essential repair work."

Useful, yes, but I hope the new certificates are backdated to the date they should have been carried out this year. So, if your car is due on the 27th of April this year then the new certificate only runs to the 27th of April next year. If that is not the case we will all be rushing to get one done in October or testing stations will have a period each year with next to nothing to do - cash flow problems - until it all washes out of the system years down the line.

So they are saying that anyone with a vehicle off the road will be unable to get it back on the road until the lock down is over?

I might test that with taxing my car. I had intended to bring it back on the road this spring when I get back into work.

If it needed an MOT before the 30th of March and does not have one then yes.

I use SORN when I'm not working or when I'm working but without my car. So I MOT and tax when required. Kind of difficult now.

Fortunately we currently have 3 cars. One runabout and two C8's, one for me and one for Mrs S. It is my C8 which is currently on SORN.
