Thanks Ria. The good doctor is saying what many of us interested amateurs have been saying for many a week- proximity and time, with the infection, are the main factors.

Wash or sanitise hands, especially when you have been out and about touching goodness knows what.

Wear a face covering if it makes you feel safe, but do realise that it is not fail-safe in protecting you. Don't, whatever you do, let it lead to you becoming complacent.

Yes, open windows and let some fresh air in. If you are one of only a few in an office this might be one of the most practical steps to take in keeping any viral load low. It is far and away better than using air-con, especially if the recycled air is not HEPA filtered, which is the most common case.

I would send the link to the Johnson but as he only does three word or three phrase slogans he would not get past the title.

I think that's one of the problems... people think wearing a mask will protect them from contracting the virus - actually only if you have a N95 medical grade mask will / may it do that. The reason people should be wearing masks when out and about is that it'll hugely reduce the chances of them infecting others - not the other way round.

And the masks need to be washable and worn once only - so (say I was going back to work), I'd ideally need three a day - one for my commute to work, one for at the office and then another for my commute home. Get home and all three into the wash. Could probably get away with two, one for the commute there and back and one for in the office.

And therein lies the next problem. You would need between 40 to 60 per month and many outlets are limiting the number purchased to as few as 10 per go, and with long delivery times. People would be having to go to different sites / chemists / shops on a regular basis. Do the maths for the whole workforce and then add in the rest of us who would need a few and you begin to see the difficulty we would all face.

Maybe that is why the government has just published patterns for us to be making our own fabric ones, as I posted on my "I was way ahead" thread.

Oops, I misread Ria who was talking about fabric masks to wear and wash, Yes, three would do for quite some time before being replaced. My point was about single use masks - the majority.

and something homemade will do and more than serve the purpose.... IF, and it's a very big if, everyone uses them as they should be used. Keep it on, don't reuse unless washed and DO NOT FIDDLE WITH IT!! And if you have to reuse it, then use the ear straps to take it off and don't touch the actual mask bit.

Simple and logical steps really - but not everyone will think to do so

Ria they're not really very good but the law is insisting that people wear them on public transport and that people can insist that they are worn around them. France, being France, facilitates that by giving nobody an excuse of "I don't have one".
