I used to do that and it worked.... I actually need to go back to doing it that way; so much more control really; but I do lots of online shopping and that's card only

I'll add to that....

I don't, because I just find that I'm constantly taking money out of the machine and tend to spend more. I also wind up with a huge clanking mess of coins in my pocket as I'm rarely in the mood to stand there and dole out the exact money every time I shop.

I've found that simply not going to the shops, not window shopping and going online to get each specific thing I need restricts me buying all those things I really didn't need that they put in front of me in the shops. That barrier of a day before you get your online shopping really does make me stop and think "do I really want that?"

This is Alfred (Shaftesbury Community Social Media) wrote:Dorset Council faced a backlash from Shaftesbury residents when they moved to contactless parking payment. They say that in response to public requests, the council is reinstating cash and card payment methods for drivers who do not use a mobile phone. Due to the required use of keypads at payment machines, visitors who choose to pay by cash or card do so at their own risk.

Result!

Although note the slightly petulant health warning from the County Council in the final sentence …
