First case reported of a statue commemorating a Black actor, in Bristol, being vandalised. It won't be the last, I'm sure.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-53011774

Mr Fagon's sister-in-law, Judy Malone-Fagon, said if it was vandalism, it was "ignorant and idiotic".
"It's the only statue to a black person in Bristol, who would do something like that?" she said.

It has been my fear since all this started that the sorts of things mentioned above would be the unintended consequences of the BLM protests.

I notice from the news that some protesters have gone from 'taking the knee' to using the old Black Power clenched fist salute. There needs to be general calming down or we will be in trouble.

Yes, it is going to put race relations back twenty years.
Captain Cook's statue in Whitby has been sprayed with graffiti.

Apparently the reason given by Topple the Racists is the killing of Maori people by Cook's men.
Well yes, we had an Empire. We got it by fighting and killing people. By that measure the statue of anyone connected to the Empire is fair game. The erasure of history, isn't it?
In quite a Stalinesque fashion. As his comrades would fall from favour Stalin would have them killed or imprisoned, and their image was removed from old group photos of soviet leaders, as rent-a-mob want to remove statues of our previous heroes.
Btw, 1,000 people in Whitby have signed up to a Facebook group to defend the Cook statue.

Go read some online comments pages of mainstream media and you will find many people getting angry at the rewriting of history, the remocval of monuments and the taking down of shows from media platforms. You wil see plenty of comments along the lines of: "I have never been openly racist. I might, on occasion, have inadvertently done things that some say are racist and for those I apologise, but if I am going to be cast as a racist just because of who I am then ....."

Some people are playing dangerous games.

Yes. If it comes to a point where people stop debating and just choose their side then watch out.

It depends whether the majority, irritated by the whole BLM disregard for law or common sense, want to do something about it or not. If the answer is Yes, watch out indeed.

I agree Saundra. Guy's and St Thomas' is a wonderful hospital and attracts doctors of the highest calibre. It is a sad decision if the hospital decides to take down his statue. These statues represent historical figures and are part of our history but they are being judged by today's standards which is so different from 100 years or so ago.

Some of these institutions taking down statues will be partially, or even fully, funded by donations. Might be worth contacting them and telling them their funding, due to a lack of moral backbone, is being cut off.

I see that the push back has started.

People who didn't fall asleep in history lessons are talking about the Nubians selling what are now Somalis and Ethiopians to the Egyptians as slaves and then, themselves, becoming slaves. Mongols and Chinese and vice-versa. Romans. South American civilisations enslaving their own peoples and others. And let us not forget the African tribes from the Congo and Mali rounding up the fit and healthy from other tribes and 'selling' them on to the Portuguese, Spanish, French and Dutch slave traders, as well as to the British, on what was known as the 'Slave Coast' - modern Nigeria to Senegal.

Slavery has been with us for aeons and still exists today, but in more acceptable forms- sweat-shops for our cheap fashion / phones. It is not a white, British or American thing.
