You learn something new every day

Postby meriad » 17 Jun 2020, 11:15

Part of the kitchen refurb was removing a stud wall between the kitchen and passage, making the area a lot bigger. I used to have a smoke alarm in the hallway but that is now gone and needs to be replaced, but question is where best to put it as basically the whole area could now be considered kitchen so anything will set it off.... so off to see if good old Google had any wise ideas; and lo and behold - today I found out that one should use a heat alarm in the kitchen area. Works on the same principle as the smoke alarm but as the name implies detects a heat increase vs particles in the air so no false alarms.

Never knew they existed :D

So now buying a heat alarm for the kitchen area and a smoke alarm for the lounge. Not sure about the bedroom, don't have anything in there at the moment

Which makes me wonder; what do you have where?

We have smoke alarms, one in the hall (near to the kitchen door) and one on each landing and they’re linked so if the one near the kitchen goes off the other two follow.

Germany also doesn't have smoke alarms as standard as they are here in the UK.

Same here.

Heat detectors in the summer would beep constantly.

I have a carbon monoxide alarm in the back room where the CH boiler is situated, and a smoke alarm in the hallway. Both are hard-wired into the mains and have battery backup. They are maintained by the company that does the annual safety checks. I also have a battery operated heat alarm for the kitchen. It has double sided sticky pads so that it can be stuck on the ceiling, a wall or the side of a cupboard.
