Fruit and vegetables.

Postby Workingman » 16 Aug 2020, 19:38

Just recently they do not keep as long as they used to and I have tried different places to buy them from.

Pears and bananas that were rock solid on the day they were bought go black or turn to mush in no time, and onions start sprouting or have a liquidy layer in the middle. It is not as though I am storing them any differently from normal so it must be something in the supply chain.

Is anyone else having problems?

Now you come to mention it, we have had some instances of carrots going off pretty quickly of late, but then the supply of carrots into our local Waitrose store has in itself been very hit and miss this summer.
Cabbage has been a bit problematic also - going yellow.

Just extending your thread slightly, I was told last week that Waitrose has been having supply chain problems generally, including tinned goods; this has been going on for a few weeks now and I'm slightly getting back to the lockdown mentality of stocking up - "if you see it, buy it ..."

That's the Portuguese one too Ossie

But it also includes anything else you see. Ovr here, if you see something you like, buy it, because if you go back next week, it's gone and they can't get another one :cute: Been caught out a few times on that one.

On the fruit and veg note, carrots from Pingo never last more than two days, the bananas I bought last week are almost inedible, they're so squishy  potatoes grow those funny bits and the broccoli

Aldi and Lidl are best for veg but they're all about an hours drive away.

Same here Frank. Last Wednesday with the Tesco delivery I’d ordered ripe(ish) bananas and a bag of green ripen at home ones. By the weekend both lots were turning brown.

It doesn’t seem to matter where they come from, although the fabulous green grocers in Cannock was sold on and went downhill and closed not long after so we don’t have that option any more.
