Often they have a (black and white chequered square, can't remember the name) to use, which I had no idea what to do until recently, but it's so easy to do so I have done it a few times.
As for the app - I'd probably get it if I thought it would help.

Do you mean the QR Code, Gal?

Yes that's it!! I only discovered how it works when learning something new for work (don't ask!!) but if you hold your phone over the QR square as if taking a picture, only don't click, it shows a link, which takes you to that establishment's track and trace page - you just complete the name and phone number thing there and that's it. Yes it's at Costa, that's where I was yesterday. I think you can leave your name and number if you don't have a smartphone too - but don't quote me!

We went in a Costa in Wales a couple of weeks ago and neither of us could get a phone signal to get that to work. There wasn’t any other way of leaving details, it was that or nothing. That area is now in a local lockdown too.

 Sorry, Kaz, I forgot to ask as well:

Was it ONLY QR code in the M&S cafe, like Jo found with that Welsh Costa, or could you give your details manually as an alternative?

I'm just interested to see if those without smartphones are going to have to pick and choose their eating out venues more carefully. We don't have any M&S's round here, as it happens, but there is one in Yeovil and we do have a Costa in town and in Shaftesbury which we used to use pre-lockdown (although - offtopic -I never thought they were the cleanest ... :? )

No, most of the (mainly elderly) customers were having it done for them, on a phone the assistant was using :) "May I have your name please, and a contact number...." 8-) xx

Our COVID tracker app works well. I check in every day, it asks if you have any symptoms or you can say if you haven’t. Almost 2 million people are using it, which I think is a great take up. If you are a close contact with a case, you will be notified through the app. It also gives plenty of info - daily confirmed cases on a weekly graph, a county by county breakdown, the latest hospital admissions and discharges, and the same with ICU numbers, plus the number of completed tests in the last 7 days and the positive rate from those tests. I find it really useful. May I say that this app was put together by our health authority and not by some private government crony.

The pub next door physically takes your phone number but they have Q reader menus if you wish.

We've been asked for contact details everywhere we have been here in Northumberland - they greet you at the door and take names and numbers before you go inside. All of the cafes and coffee shops this is, we've not been to a pub or restaurant this time, but I'd imagine they're the same.
