Changes to the vaccination process

I’ve just been speaking to my boss about the vaccinations.

All the people I booked in for their vaccinations this weekend were also booked to return for their second shot in 3 weeks time. They are now going to be told when they arrive for their first jab that they don’t need to return in 3 weeks but instead will be contacted by their GP (ie - me!) for an appointment for their 2nd jab in 12 weeks time.

Apparently they (whoever they are) have decided that the first shot gives a good enough cover to delay the second dose to try and get as many people vaccinated with the first shot as possible because Covid numbers are spiralling out of control.

Also, we should start jabbing with the Oxford vaccine on the week beginning 11th January. So it looks like I’m in next week getting people booked in.

Forgot to say - the main reason she rang was to see if I wanted a vaccination.

One of the four surgeries booking for this weekend have been pretty slow and it looks as they are going to have around 50 slots not booked - which means 50 vaccinations left over.

They don’t want to waste the vaccinations so any left over are being given to nhs staff that have been working on the vaccinations. So I may get a phone call on Sunday telling me to get myself to Bakewell to have my jab.

Oh heck, I really wanted my mum-in-law to get her second jab on the 20th I'm so fed up with the constantly changing goalposts with this government

I think it makes sense to try abs get as many people vaccinated as possible, even if it means delaying the second dose.

But it is an administrative pain in the arse!

There's no real indication of anything positive about the Covid vaccination rollout on our local surgery's website other than the usual "Don't call us, we'll call you" message - which doesn't fill me with confidence as we never got called for the flu vaccine back in the Autumn, and had to chase them - and a vague comment that vaccinations might commence "early January" and, (as they seem to be working with the neighbouring Blackmore Vale partnership in this respect), probably starting in Sturminster Newton!

My reading of this is that, unlike Debih's and other practices that we've variously mentioned on this thread, our lot have yet to get their act together. I appreciate they will be "under pressure", but I must say, we have had a history of administrative niggles in dealing with this practice, usually over the sending of repeat prescriptions to the pharmacy, and I know we're not the only punters who have had problems.

Anyway, Mrs O and I await events with interest. If I can see that vaccinations are being rolled out to over 70's with ULH at other practices and we still haven't heard anything from our lot, then I guess I will probably have to have a word with them.

I mentioned backalong on the forum that Master O had his first dose Pfizer vaccination just before Christmas (as a healthcare worker). He has just phoned us to say he has now started showing most of the Covid symptoms and has had to go to a Testing Centre in Brighton. Rapid test results came back as negative, but he has to wait for the proper test results to come through (48 hours); until then he must self-isolate. He reports that his hospital, Eastbourne, is overrun with Covid patients ....
