I'm off for the vaccine

How ridiculous to be excited about a little jab but I am.

Got a phone call from one of the GP's about an hour ago to ask me to get to the little cottage hospital where they have been vaccinating the over 80's all weekend. We always knew that if they had any vaccines left over they would be contacting the staff from the four surgeries that are using that hub. We were pretty sure that there would be as one surgery wasn't exactly proactive in getting its patients booked in.

And then it snowed heavily yesterday afternoon from about 3pm which would have put some people off going to their appointment.

So off for my jab.

Well, thats that then!

I don't think I have ever been to anything so organised.

Staff in the driveway and car parks showing you where to park. Then staff at the door making sure you had a mask and giving you a squirt of hand sanitiser before telling you where to go. A short queue in a corridor where a nurse was telling you what would happen. Then through to see a clinician who went through medical history and possible side effects. Then through to another room to a table with 3 clinicians and one admin. Admin took details and gave you a card and a time, one clinician mixed the dose, one clinician passed it to a third clinician who gave me my jab. Then taken through to another room to sit and wait until my time (15 minutes) was up and I was allowed to leave. More staff showing you the way out and outdoor staff directing you out of the car park.

Good old NHS - very, very smoothly done.

They vaccinated over 3000 people this weekend Saundra at a small cottage hospital. Bearing in mind that this weekend they were vaccinating the most vulnerable people in a pandemic (the over 80’s) they don’t want loads of people hanging around and mingling with each other.

And of course this particular vaccine has to be mixed just before it is given.

Everyone was masked. Everyone, other than the clinician that spent less than 30 second vaccinating me, was very well socially distanced.

Yes - it’s probably costing the NHS a fortune to pay all the staff to do it but I’m sure that’s probably less than the cost of a having a very small number of those being vaccinated on an IC unit.

From just doing the flu vaccines at our surgery (when we usually do around 500 people each time) we’ve learnt from experience the more people working the smoother it runs.
