Shell, when you said "cheque" I thought that you meant a pen and paper job of old, not the modern versions using an app.   But I totally agree about the safety and convenience of online banking - it is there 24/7 most of the time.

Saundra, I am like you regarding the phone. Mine is for calls, texts and used as a camera / video, and I have downloaded WhatsApp and also Aimp for my music files. I am simply not interested in using it for anything else.

As for the Kindle.... if you use it for posting on VV, and you do, ;) then you can use it for banking. It is just as easy. I really do think that you should at least give it a go. My earlier post might make it look intimidating, but it really isn't. Once it is set up it is a doddle to use. Please, have a word with Liv and your SiL and get them to give you a hands-on demonstration.

Ah, I see that you posted as I was composing. I think that is one very good idea and reason for checking it out. :D :D :D

I signed up for online banking when we retired 9 years ago and am very used to it now. I always access it on my iPad and like Frank, would not do it on my phone. The one thing I hate is transferring money to someone else’s account, I’m always afraid I’ll get a number wrong. Thankfully I don’t have to do it too often. Saundra, Edward has a small pension from England, and once it was set up, it arrives in our account every month without fail. His Irish pension is also paid into the account and it is very convenient not needing to go to the post office every week…….god knows we spent 34 years in the post office and he had enough!!

Where did I get Liv from, I meant J? :P :P

I only do Internet banking on my laptop and that never leaves the house nowadays - it's become my desktop. I would not dream of using my phone for banking or buying stuff.

Saundra, if your pension is going to be being paid into your bank account, can you not use your bank card to draw out your cash at the same post office counter you usually use, (admittedly after it's been cleared into your bank)?

I have to say, and yes, you can all sneer at me :P , I've got a thick skin, I'm no fan of online banking and resent the way Covid has pushed me into having to use it more and more. I would never rely on it, and would always insist on receiving monthly paper statements as a failsafe. Like Osc, I'm paranoid about transferring money and have to double and triple-check the account and the amount. I still use cheques, and if pushed into it, I will use over-the-telephone payment of bills using a credit card (which I guess might actually be riskier than online banking transfers) but only with traders I know and trust. As my bank branch is in another town which we never go to these days, I've been using our local building society to draw cash out. The biggest change Covid has made is that I'm using contactless debit / credit cards for most day-to-day transactions, pre Covid it was all cash. Mind you, I do have a mate who I know won't even use contactless .... :|

Shell, when you said "cheque" I thought that you meant a pen and paper job of old, not the modern versions using an app.

I think you can "pay in" old-fashioned pen-and-paper cheques using an app on your phone, can't you? I'm pretty sure Master O does that. The very rare cheques I receive get paid into the local building society. I never win anything on my Premium Bonds anyway!

Ah, right, then as Ossie says all you need is a bank debit card for daily use. You can use one in shops and at holes-in-the-wall for cash, and most places will allow you to get cash back as you shop You can still get monthly paper statements so no need for the Internet. Just talk to your bank and explain, they should help.

yes, cheques, you just photograph them using the banking app and press a button, job done.

Osc when I set up a new payee it asks me the sort code and then confirms the bank, then it asks me the account number and the name of the account and confirms it. For instance last week I wanted to pay the man who fitted my tyres, I typed the sort code and it said Lloyds, I just assumed that was right. Then it asked me the account number, typed it in, then the name. I typed the name of the company Dels Tyres, it told me that did not match, did I want to continue or cancel and check. I cancelled, and then retyped Derek Morgan his name, and that was a tick. So you cant really get it wrong if the person has given you the correct details.

Shell, the system is different here. You need the BIC and IBAN numbers, the IBAN is about 22 characters long. Then you get your little calculator-like thing, put in your card and get a code, which you then use to verify the transfer. It’s quite a palaver and thankfully I don’t need to do it too often.
