Ally, San Fran.

Do a trip round the southern end of the north bay. Take the Bay Bridge to Oakland - foot down and drive through quickly - then up through Berkeley (Uni City) and Richmond and then over the San Rafael bridge to San Quentin (the prison). Come back along the coast via Sausalito (big marina, big yachts) to the Golden Gate and the Presidio (big parkland) - about 45 miles.

Then get your walking boots on. 125 miles east gets you to Yosemite NP, the Sequoia forest and the giant redwoods. You can yomp free or join a guided tour - well worth it. Avoid Oakland, Fremont and San Jose. O and F are dumps and SJ is super expensive - Silicon Valley and all that.

BTW if you want a KFC don't expect 'fries' it's mash and gravy. :shock:

Last time we were there, we travelled Washington to Boston by train, very relaxing when you’ve had a busy few days sightseeing. We toured some of the US by train for our 25th anniversary, can’t believe we are now planning what to do for our 50th next year :shock:

Agree about Alcatraz. Can also recommend one particularly nice place to eat in Washington. Half the fun is planning, isn’t it!!

Osc, Boston is special. It is a big city with a small town atmosphere. I loved it. Even the English feel safe. Tea, vicar?

I am trying to get my mate Andy to free drive Route 66. Fly to Chicago, hire a six pack and drive to Santa Monica, fly home. Trouble is he wants everything planned to the nth, whereas I am a lot more freestyle (cheaper) - pull over, throw the bag on the ground, get in, sleep sort of thing.

Can't do it on my own, so if there are any adventurers out there.... :lol:

Ally,

I have been to New York several times. Went up the Twin Towers in December before they were blown up the following year.
Have also bben to Los Angeles. Went to one of the old Queen's ships which is docked there. Have also been to San Fransisco.
You must have a ride on the trams.
One thing I remember about New York is when they say it is in the next block, this could be a walk of about 400 yards,
Will try and remember other useful info. We did not travel on trains. Used the undreground in NY and LA.
