Doing anything this evening?

Postby TheOstrich » 24 Nov 2021, 19:20

So, the thing is ....

Back in 2020, the Ostrich, eyes rolling at special offers and BOGOFs, acquired an exceedingly large tub of Storm margarine from Iceland  . And it is now out of date.

Seriously out of date - 21/06/21 to be precise.

So waste not, want not, Mrs O and I decided to bake a cake. A semi-rich fruit cake. :D
Mrs O dug out an ancient recipe book published in the 1970's or some-such by Stork themselves, and we found we had all the ingredients we needed.

This afternoon, we duly set to, and by 3:30 we had a lovely 8" fruit cake cooling on the tray. :Hi:

We've just discovered a problem, though. :?
We haven't got a cake tin big enough to house it. We've sliced the top off and it's still to big.

So, the kettle's on, and if you can possibly make it over to the Nest, a cuppa and a gert big slice awaits you.
But you'd better make it in the next half hour or so, because there's an Ostrich skulking outside the kitchen door looking exceedingly shifty ....

There's nothing for it but to square your shoulders Os, and eat lots of cake; when the cake mountain is sufficiently reduced it will then fit in the tin. :)

Would love to Ossie, but the broomstick is in for a service.

Wrap the thing in foil and keep in a cool place.... it'll keep forever.

Mum used to make the Christmas cakes in the summer school holidays and they were wrapped in said foil and sat in the bottom drawer of the dresser till the weekend before the day. In fact round about this time of year they would be opened up and given a glass of sherry before closing up and going back in the drawer.

I'd already suggested that to Mrs O, Saundra, getting one of those deep Quality Street tins - but she vetoed it. :(
I'm not allowed to eat a whole tin of Quality Street .....

Yes, we thought of the foil, WM, but too late, I'd already sliced the top off the cake.

Have you not got a tape measure.
You should have measured the tin before you baked the cake.

Next time bake two smaller cakes and have two tins so that you can put one in each tin
Problem solved.
