Helping Ukraine

I was wondering if anywhere local was taking donations of clothing, so I asked on Facebook. Someone linked me to a local group, who I asked to join and they were asking for donations but not of the usual clothing etc, but more medical type stuff. They had an Amazon wish list which she sent me so Tim and I have both donated. He has bought a couple of medical bags, including stuff for burns. I on the other hand bought four large boxes of teenage sanitary wear. I remember how awful those days were without it being in a war zone.

It was really easy and I feel I have actually done something that might help.

Just posting in case it was something that might be of interest to anyone and might be available through your local community

Locally, donations are being sought with a view to despatching a lorry-load of supplies (like you said, medical and toiletries, not food) to the Ukrainian border area. There are currently collection points all over North Dorset, and the lorry departs 4th March I believe. Typically, though, there isn't a donation point in our town, but I'm keeping an eye on FB and if one materialises, yes, we'll buy something and donate.

Additionally, Mrs O and I have been discussing today what assistance we might be able to give to refugees who may eventually come to this country / county. We'll see how things develop.

The Amazon wish list sounds interesting, I will look into that I did donate some money for Ukraine via the Red Cross, but you do wonder with these huge charities, about how much actually reaches the point of need

I messaged her this morning, so I am loading up my car with coats, jumpers and socks, which she said would be useful and taking them to her. She said you cant miss my house, I will report back

One of our local bars is the collection point, amongst others in Ourique, but I had a clear out not so long ago, so will have to find something to take in on Wednesday.

I’ve been looking for an Amazon wish list but can’t find one, only one in the US.

I’d added a load of items onto my Tesco delivery for tomorrow as the church which uses the rugby club function room down on the main road were having a collection between 12 and 2 tomorrow but now it’s been cancelled. They’ve now asked for money donations to a charity (can’t think which one now) instead but like you Kaz, I feel wary of who’s really benefitting so I’d rather buy products that can be useful.

I did give to a charity in the end, a local one taking medical supplies out there. There are quite a few Ukranians in Gloucester, the supplies are going to the Polish border.

They are asking for people in our area to stop donating items as they have been overwhelmed. We have a strong Polish émigré presence in North Dorset.
I think they are transporting the stuff to the Polish border town of Przemyśl, which has featured in a number of BBC TV news reports on the refugees.

Yes, I think money is wanted so it can be used on what is most needed.

I'm very carefull about giving cash to a charity
Simply because when you see the wages paid to the CEO and tv advertising I wonder how much every goes to causes

During covid is being investigated
They say they gave nhs £40 million but where did it actually go? I wonder?
I do support the local hospice tho
