And the gloves, don't forget the gloves. Does anyone remember any national campaign or TV ads telling us how to dispose of these things properly? We have gone through billions of them over the past two years.

Being a potential bio-hazard there should have been something from the get go to tell us how to get rid safely.

Just bringing this back up again.

Is it me or is it getting harder to recycle?

We have to take soft plastics to a supermarket now. Tetrapacks can’t be recycled, we’re told to either put them in with the household waste or take them to the tip which isn’t possible for a lot of people as it’s not easily accessible. (We avoid the tip as much as possible, in the last two years we’ve (coincidentally?) needed two new tires due to nails sticking in them after visiting there).

This morning we’ve had bags delivered to put paper and cardboard in. That now can’t go into the blue bin with glass and hard plastics (but not black plastic because that can’t be recycled at all).
We’ve gone backwards, we had bags to begin with and they constantly blew away or the bin men managed to lose them in the back of the truck. These apparently won’t blow away though once emptied and left on the street because they’re weighted.
Me being me, I decided to put that to the test. It’s a breezy day so I opened it up and put it out on the patio. The wind caught it and it went tumbling down the garden straight away. No surprise though as the wind often blows the bins over in our street so a bag has no chance.

I'm lucky where I am because I can recycle most things kerbside. But saying that, I just had a look at my council website and need to check a bit more because they say I can't recycle hard plastic - but they don't specify what plastics are because I can recycle plastic bottles, tubs, pots and trays and plastic carrier bags.

Any plastics I cannot recycle I collect and bring to work as Westminster council incinerates vs putting into landfill (which my council unfortunately does).

Crisp packets, food pouches etc, I still collect separately and take to Tesco's whenever I can

Oh Jo, what a faff!. :?

Ours hasn't changed recently, they built a huge (and locally, very controversial thanks to the NIMBY brigade) incinerator a few miles out of the city, and everything goes in there.

We generally have two bins - green and black, plus a brown for garden waste, but that is optional - pay extra.

Just about anything can go in the black bin because it is sorted for recyclables, just like the green bin, but the rest goes for incineration to produce electricity to run the site and communal heating.

The green bin takes all sorts: tetra packs, plastic trays and bottles, paper, tins and cans etc. The big no-nos are bubble wrap, shredded paper and black food trays - they go in the black bin. Clothes, bedding, shoes, small electricals, batteries and glass go to the many recycling centres in just about every large supermarket car park.

The big problem seems to be that there is no unified way to recycle in the country.

They introduced those bags in Somerset last year - there's 6 different recycling bins/bags/boxes etc that have to be used now, 2 bins, 2 bags and 2 boxes. And, Jo, collections also went to three-weekly ......
Thankfully that hasn't arrived in Dorset yet.
