The Cons are, in general, a self-preservation society. They enjoy a bit of Et tu Brute back stabbing so long as it does not damage the brand.

Johnson, however, has a broad back, acres to aim at.

It depends. Not all of them think he is wrong. Not all constituents think he's wrong. If those who are backing him fall into that 170, then the rest are vulnerable to being reminded that they joined the party and they put themselves up to be a Tory MP. Not an independent but a MP of a party and that the party/government decides what the agenda is.

Tory MP's tend to be more independent because of the background they come from. However they are usually realists and when shown the reality of their position, they will usually accept it.

I think it would require a full member vote to change that particular rule. I, for one, would not vote for it.

The last thing the 1922, or the party itself, needs right now is any more conflict or uncertainty.

The press is rabbiting on about "what if", but that is a pure flight of fancy. Boris can't make the party any more damaged than the party playing political games internally to oust a sitting PM. That would do far more damage than it could possibly gain in boost (if there is one), from a new PM. In fact the chances are that Boris could recover for them over the next two years and then they'd be in a far better position than they would be if revealed as a bunch of snakes nobody could trust.
