A very lucky escape! SOME PICS

There was a bit of a commotion outside. The wreckers have just turned up with J's van on the back of a tow truck - it is a write-off.

He is a maintenance manager at the university in York and was coming home on the A64. Yesterday a car entering from the slip road misjudged things and caught the van on the near side rear corner. The momentum took J over the hard shoulder and into the barrier and tipped it on its side. The van is a right mess but J escaped without a scratch. A very lucky lad.

The car driver was over the limit at just after 6 PM!!!

When the replacement hire van turns up I will give J a hand transferring his tools and safety gear from one to the other. All his little trays with thousands of screws, nuts and bolts and other bits and bobs he is going to shovel into a wheelbarrow and boxes and take them to the skip.

Crikey that is a very lucky escape - wow and phew! the guardian angels were certainly keeping an eye on J

Why doesn't he offer the nuts / bolts etc on freecycle - someone will take them I'm sure and save him a tip to the skip

Ria, they are all different types and sizes, wood screws, bolts, washers, pop rivets etc. all in a big heap. I suggested he weighs them in for scrap - he might get a few quid.

Just waiting for his long term, hire van to turn up, the one they gave him is no good for his needs.

I don't like the A64 at the best of times, too much traffic for only two lanes.
Drunk at six in the afternoon though, crikey. Then to go driving on a road like the A64, that's asking for trouble.
It's lucky no one was badly hurt.

J has trade insurance so all the contents are insured... and then that cost will be passed on to the drunk's insurers. He is going to have a tough and expensive time in future.

Cromwell, it was at that stupid junction westbound from Taddy. Also at that time of day the lowish sun would be directly in the drunk's eyes.

J has decided not to use the big Merc except for getting to and from, he'll use on-site gear for a while. He will wait for his new van before transferring stuff. The rear interior of the Vivaro was a special fit - a one-off build... more cost for the drunk's insurers.

The other driver was not drunk.... he was high on drugs. Audi A3. Apparently the road was closed of seven hours.

Hope J's getting on ok and not had any post-event trauma over it.
