Train fares

Isn’t it ridiculous how the prices differ? I’ve not really noticed before because the last time I booked a train to London was three years ago and it was around £15 each but prices have gone crazy since then, and there’s less choice, then so I did a comparison before I booked.

Me and Tom have been promising ourselves a day there, something we often used to do before the pandemic, so decided to go during half term.
I’ve priced up five different routes, all leaving and arriving at around the same time; one from Cannock to Marylebone, one from Penkridge to Marylebone, Penkridge to Euston, Stafford to Euston and Cannock to Euston. We have to change at New St on three and for Marylebone we have to walk the 3 minutes over to Moor St Station. Penkridge to Euston is change at Wolverhampton. Stafford to Euston is direct.

These are prices for two btw.

Cannock - Marylebone £51.50
Penkridge - Marylebone £71.90
Stafford - Euston £93
Penkridge - Euston £103.20
Cannock - Euston £105.80 (journey is 30 minutes shorter)

And your trains are a lot better, Jan, big reclining seats and wide aisles.

Leeds to Brum for the meet would cost £140 return by train. Mgabus for the same is £14 and that included seat reservations, hence me going by bus... and it is only 20 minutes longer.

For my trip to Birmingham from Wigan in December I have paid £32.00 for a Standard Return ticket.
The First Class from Wigan to Birmingham would be £85.00 for the one journey..


When I booked the tickets for the July met I got First Class ticket from Wigan to Birmingham and a Satandard back from Birmingham to Wigan for £65.00.
Seems there is not a similar deal now.

About 7 years ago Mrs S and #1 daughter went to Glasgow for a long weekend. They thought they would go train, first class. Until the ticket price from Newark came in at £760 Each and 4 changes.

They took a flight, £60 for both of them and they got half a day extra in Glasgow at each end.

As for the sleeper from FIFE to London. They priced themselves out of the market over a decade ago.

Train is one of the last places I look in the UK now.

Different train companies Jan. Anything going from New St to Euston is by Avanti (who have just this week been put on a warning to improve their services) and Moor St to Marylebone is by Chiltern and that’s altogether a better experience, especially as you avoid the hell hole that is Euston.
