So now we have Jeremy Hunt as chancellor. He has a PPE Degree so is well qualified, eh? Truss has the same, but hers from Merton trumps Hunt's from Magdelen - temporarily.

Where do the political parties get these people from?

He certainly stuck the knife into Kwarteng in his first interview, and by her association with him, also into Truss. He (rightly) trashed Trussonomics within hours and in the process has probably made himself the most powerful member of government, even more so than Truss.

He has already said that some taxes will rise and that there will be spending cuts - though he would not be drawn on how much, when or where though no department is safe - and there is sod all Truss can do about them. He has also said that the revised "economic statement" will become a "proper" budget.

What a mess!

Oh dear.

And when I said this was a smear campaign run by people who want their own way I was told that Boris was untenable and had to GO!

May was untenable, Truss was never more than a 2.5 year caretaker.

Untenable. We haven't seen the best of untenable yet? Anyone remember the constant litany of votes of no confidence in the late 70's until Labour lost that one fateful seat and came tumbling down?

I never voted for Blair and I was told I didn't understand. I did vote for Boris and I have never regretted it.

Now you see a party which will get what it deserves at the next election. A party which has become used to power, rather than authorising power and has decided they like it.

You can be sure that the deselection bloodletting that goes on for the next election will be brutal.

The biggest irony of the lot would be if they oust Truss and have another election and Boris stands.

I would laugh my ass off and I still haven't finished laughing from the last mess.

All they had to do was stand firm under Boris and say No you are not doing that.

Just what we need right now, a country paralysed by a leadership change in the Tory party going into a critical winter with energy being unsure and a war both raging and escalating in Ukraine, threatening to take us all down with them.

But those scummy Tory MP's gotta do what they do and stab her in the back.

Remember all the poe faces when Boris finally resigned and he sat there for months whilst the whole election panned out??

Let's go for that again, I mean it is soooo good for the UK isn't it??

God I'm going to die laughing if they don't get their act together and realise that this is a country which needs running and not a personal ass covering competition.

They are all useless creatures, Conservative and Labour alike. All they do is spout their pipe dreams on how they are going to fix the economy and promote growth - I wish. I am fed up with seeing people crossing the channel and coming into this country illegally. Apparently, if we are to believe what we read, cheaper hotels are now in short supply so illegal immigrants are being housed in more luxurious hotels. Needless to say, there are no checks on the movement of these immigrants. Somebody is making a lot of money from this illegal trafficking and the British taxpayer is footing the bill. Such influxes are not sustainable, from cost to the taxpayer, housing, education, health, etc. How many nurses could be trained and paid a decent salary with the money we spend on immigration - there is no return on it, especially when we give it to France, and it just goes down a black hole. Meanwhile we have one of the worst pension schemes in Europe and has been suggested that pensioners who work after pension age to get a little bit extra should start re-contributing to national insurance. That seems to have been knocked in the head for now but judging by the number of U turns it could easily be resurrected. And why do we have a two tier state pension with the older pensioners drawing less pension, the very ones who need a bit extra. The rules were changed apparently, but is that the fault of the older pensioners who paid what they were asked at the time?

If Nigel puts himself back in the arena he will get my vote. I would rather throw my lot in with him again than vote for leftie zealots or the chinless wonders we have got now.

We now have the BoE's Andrew Bailey warning that interest rates may need to rise by more than previously expected. And he described his discussions with Hunt as a "meeting of minds".

0.75% to 1% were expected but those appear to have been ditched for even higher rates.

All of today's UK catastrophes have been manufactured by the Tories. Yes, Covid was global and Ukraine is causing problems, especially in Europe, but trashing the UK economy and our way of life is all down to the Cons.

The job of the BOE is to keep the country stable as the government acts out their agenda for the country.

Just like the Fed they have chosen to base their actions on an outdated expectation of inflation. Inflation drivers are almost completely external. Now the UK government wants to stimulate the economy instead of allowing the BOE drive it into recession and deflation. Just as the Fed are doing because the Inflation (reduction), act is doing the same as the proposed Tory tax cuts.

The BOE, just like the Fed, is determined to stamp out any inflation even if they have to tank the economy and destroy jobs.

In the 70's the fed upped interest rates from 10% to 20%. That is a doubling. Today the Fed intends to raise interest rates 16x in order to "reduce inflation" to an arbitrary 2% based on nothing more than the last 3 decades of Global finance controls.

The 70's rises were due to an energy crisis. The 2022 rises are due to an energy crisis. Doubling is an acceptable move in a crisis. 16x is not acceptable, it is a panic move driven by fear of losing control.

I have little. Time for the BOE moans. Get on and do your job and if you do it right, things will go smoothly. The BOE rate rises, which have not stopped external inflationary pressures, is the cause of loose fiscal policy. Not the other way around.

BTW, that is not just my personal view, it is the concern of a growing number of fund managers. You just don't hear. About them.

He certainly did. He answered the question about where the money is coming from. All the unions, NHS trusts and Schools are a squawking as they suddenly realise that the sacrificial lamb becomes public services to the scythe of Austerity.

ROTFLMAO. Oh it was all wrong to give everyone what they need to run the country and provide services. No, someone had to lose.

Indeed they will.

Suff, for a reasonably intelligent person you do seem hidebound by dogma and ideology to the exclusion of all else.

Ben Wallace now threatens to quit if defence spending promises are not met by Hunt, and most Tory MPs now want him as a "unity candidate" as PM.

Pantomime season has started early this year.

This in-fighting would be hilarious if it was not damaging the country and its people so much.

Well done you Blue(KIP)s.

Might as well blame Blair and Brown for all this.... and Corbyn - definitely Corbyn, but not the Tories, never the Tories.

Atm the conservatives are just hanging on hoping that somehow something will turn around for them in the next two years. I can't see it. Certainly the sight of Liz Truss hanging on desperately is just embarrassing.
They may as well have a GE now and put themselves out of their misery. They have backstabbed one leader, realised that the new leader they have elected is (to put it mildly) a dud and then are proceeding to backstab her as well.
The party is doing this for one simple reason; MP's want to hang on to their seats, nothing else matters to them. Unfortunately for them this is very evident to the public at large and the the crash come the next election will be epic.
Not because there is mass enthusiasm for Starmer, anything but. But the Tories have sickened off their own supporters, who will stay at home instead of voting.
My one hope is that the serial snake and backstabber Gove gets his comeuppance come the next election.

One point I would disagree with you on WM is the power of the media. They are not reporting news so much these days as relentlessly attacking politicians and policies they don't like.

Anyway, it looks like fishy Rishi is going to get by foul means what he couldn't get by fair means. I wonder how long Truss can endure her humiliation before that happens?

I have already decided that the rest of this parliament will be a shambles until the next election.

When the Tory MP's create that shambles I point exactly at the cause.

Ditto the policy change of the government and the bleating of the BOE as the self serving traders try to gain advantage on the policy changes and risk tanking the pensions market.

Not only do the BOE have the tools to support government policy changes, it is their job.

Fixed term parliaments are causing this mess along with Tory MP's who think they can torpedo the government at no cost at the polls.

It will be just over 2 years now. Suck it up it's going to be a hell of a ride. It didn't need to be but, it seems, everyone but those who voted Boris into the leadership wanted him gone.

He is gone. Chaos reigns. Tough.
