Remember the photo ID thread?

I have looked and cant find it to update, but I have finally had to give in. I wanted to book a tour of the disused underground stations in London, but you have to have ID? Why????

Anyway someone suggested a rail card, so I drove down the station and paid my £30 for a senior railcard, but no photo. Bit annoying as went to London yesterday, but am going again in a couple of weeks and will no doubt go to Birmingham at some point.

So I have now finally completed everything for a Citizen ID card. I have uploaded the documents, my friends has completed the referee part so hopefully I might finally have photo ID.

I did have to laugh though, £30 for a rail card, £15 for a citizen card, all because I totally refuse to give the DVLA anymore money. They could replace my licence if they wished. They replace them for free if you change your name or your address so why should I pay £20. I wonder if you get it replaced for free if you need points adding on?

What hassle m m I know it's controversial but I really can't see why we don't have ID cards so much easier but open to fraud I expect

Then everyone starts demanding an ID card for every stupid thing. You suddenly find you can't do much of anything without an ID card.

When you do not have an ID card the general consensus is you don't need photo ID. It all becomes much more sensible and photo ID is only required where it is really needed.

Last week in Canada they were demanding photo ID to get into the Casino. Why? Because everyone has an ID card so they can. You couldn't even get in the door. In vegas you can get in the door but if you want to gamble you need ID on you. Why this way in Vegas? Because in the US you don't have an ID card.

In France people carry their ID Card all the time. Want to write a cheque? ID. Loads of things you need ID for which in the UK you would not. Why? Because they have an ID card and the places can demand it.

You might think that you just put in in the drawer and take it out when it is convenient to you. Not a chance. ID cards have scope creep. Once you are forced to have one, it can be required for a huge host of things. Don't bother arguing, you'll just be shown the door.

Being labelled with an ID card is Never something you take lightly. Choice is one thing. Force is another.

Suff I completely agree, but I am struggling without one now.

As you yourself say everybody has one, so everywhere demands one. I cant even book for a tour of the disused underground stations in London without one. I cant collect my parcel from the depot. I cant even travel to the Channel Islands without ID even though I dont need a passport.

Im just making life difficult for myself, no one else cares whether I have one or not.

We all do that MM. I have a driving license and a passport. So not so much of an issue for me.

If I recall correctly, both the driving license and passport services will accept the picture from a valid one of either. Regardless of the age of the photo. My driving license I was forced to renew last year had a 20 year old photo on it... I did enjoy messing them around with that, the photo had Zero value but it was all "legal".

All this demanding ID is, I fear, deliberately driven to try and force the ID Card issue. It is not required but they have an agenda.

Interestingly I checked Ryanair identity requirements. Passport or government ID card only. But Condor Ferries who you can take to Jersey and Guernsey state:

A valid passport (i.e. in date)
An expired passport (domestic sailings only, up to two years after expiry)
Common law passport
Valid EU or Swiss national identity card
Valid driving licence (full or Provisional are accepted)
Valid armed forces identity card
Valid police warrant card/badge
A child on parent’ s passport is an acceptable form of ID
Citizen Card or Civilian Card, available from http://www.citizencard.com/
Valid firearm certificate
Valid government-issued identity card
NHS SMART card
Electoral identity card

The electoral card is free. and you need.

BA just says Photo ID but does not specify. EasyJet says Photo ID but gives "some examples".

It is a minefield. I guess that if you don't have a passport then getting the airline to send you a written confirmation that your chosen photo ID is acceptable would be the way to go.

I have held a passport since I was 16 and I have held a driving license since 18. I was difficult about getting a photo ID driving license, but then I moved home. End of story, change address, photo ID....

Yes if I changed my name, my address or maybe even got some points added on they would change it for free but not just because I would like them to. So I still have my little pink licence. I don’t have a passport either. Citizen card it is.


Oooh I’ve got an NHS smart card. The picture is 20 years old though. How daft is that

Suff, Joe got his provisional licence just before his 17th birthday and his passport photo was used by DVLA. However, that photo was actually taken when he was 11 and very baby faced. When he passed his test the photo from the provisional was then automatically used on his full licence so he paid to get the licence reissued with an updated photo
