We had an interesting case where our neighbours across the road own a lane that lead to a cottage. But along the lane is access to a field owned by the house next door and access had been granted by the previous owner.

In French law this is strictly governed. However the access was granted for feed for animals and not for vehicles and the people who bought the house next door were told they had vehicular access. Of course the new owners want to build properties in the field and use the lane as access.

The whole thing blew up and went to court. Where the new neighbours were totally intransigent and refused to engage in arbitration and so the courts allowed access to the lane to be blocked by the owners.

It's been going on for years now but it was an interesting ending.
