I do about 15k miles in Europe. These should not be charged in the UK. How are they going to do that without GPS?

Why would the UK be interested in what you do in Europe, providing it is not illegal?

We could still charge you for miles driven in the UK as you have to go through passport control. Reading a speedo as you travel - in and out - is easy as it is just another check, and it offers a new play on the words "pay as you go". Pay, or we take the car away. Brexit allowed us to take back control.

The non-GPS non problem has already been addressed.

If you only take the miles on MOT I get billed for non UK miles.

If your vehicle is registered outside the UK it can be checked - in and out - and charged: the MOT is irrelevant.

For UK registered vehicles running in the UK the charges, PPM, are easy to impose and EV freeloaders will be hit. Get used to it.

My vehicle is UK registered and does thousands of miles outside the UK. So neither of your solutions work.

OK, so you are the one exception in many a million. The vast majority of other freeloaders will still have to pay, somehow.

I wasn't aware I was freeloading. In fact I'm paying my tax but doing more than half my miles outside the country. I guess you would call my grandson with his aygo a freeloader as his ved is zero and it is not an EV.

I'm going to pick up a 12 year old car as a second car to allow me to fly when I travel. Reducing my mileage even more. So now I'll be paying 2x ved but doing dramatically less miles. I specifically chose the vehicle because it is in one of the low bracket years with £120 ved, less than my 2019 C4. Buying the car that really interested me for £1,200 but £700 per year ved held no interest for me at all.

ved is a scam and always has been. PPM will not resolve that, only drive the prices far higher for those who need their vehicles the most.
