I see that the Con commenters and MPs have been wheeled out in force and are doing their best to talk this up, but it's going to be a hard sell.

The result was roughly 1/3rds within a few percentage points. 1/3 wanted Badenoch, 1/3 wanted Jenrick and 1/3 didn't want either of them. Hardly a resounding endorcement.

How it will go down with the ordinary electorate is anybody's guess.

I don't think either of them are any worse than the ones in power at the moment. In the weird world of politics the Labour Party only got around 30% of the vote but managed to win over 400 seats.

Average turnout since the war is about 74%. Average winning vote is about 41% of the 74%. Governments tend to get in with about 31% of all those eligible to vote. Some get huge majorities and some only just scrape in, that's just how things work, and some, like Wilson, Cameron and May, end up with a minority / hung parliament and have to do deals.

The thing is that we don't moan when "our" party wins, it only becomes a problem when the "other lot" get in. Maybe PR (proper PR) is the answer.

Nearly 60% of the Tory party members didn't want Badenoch, yet she is the "winner". Right?

Thus far Badenough has managed to fill three posts with Patel, Stride and Trott. Cleverly, Hunt, Dowden and Barclay have already said that they will go to the back benches so, is the cupboard bare?

Will there even be a shadow cabinet to meet tomorrow?
