Uploading Photos

Postby cruiser2 » 09 Dec 2012, 16:46

I think Suff gave instructions how to upload photos onto VV.
Would like to do this but would like some help.
Please keep it simple.
I will take a copy so that I can keep refering to it.
Many thanks

Cruiser, you need an image host on the Internet to get photos into VV:

Tinypic: http://tinypic.com/
Photobucket: http://beta.photobucket.com/
ImageShack: http://imageshack.us/
or similar.

You need to download your photos from your camera to a folder on your computer. It is up to you what the folder is called or where it is. A good and simple place might be the Desktop in a folder you create called Photos.

When you connect your camera to download your photos they will probably be called DCP00001, 00002.... 00095. Highlight the ones you want to move/save and choose 'Save As'. In the new window navigate to your Desktop Photos folder and in the file type box choose .jpg or ,jpeg. Click OK and the files will be saved to the Desktop Photos folder.

In that folder they will still be DCP 00001 etc. You can now rename them.

Now you need to go to your choice of Internet site and upload them. Each site has its own method so you will have to follow its rules. Once uploaded your photos will be given a unique name. It might sound like nonsense to you - "Bill's party" could become 2d34Srt9.jpg as far as the site is concerned, but that is their way of organizing many photos that could have the same name. I digress.

What you need from the site is the link address. You will probably be given a number of choices but the one you want is the on that starts and finishes for example: Image

You can copy and paste that link directly into a VV post and it should allow a link to show your photo. Using Preview on your post will confirm whether or not it has worked.

Actually it was WM who did a very detailed document from camera to online store, to posts. I did a resize one for avatars.

Whilst we can give lots of instructions it's much easier if you understand files, file management and the disk structure on your PC. In that way you won't lose files and you will always know how to get them from your camera onto your computer and then you can put them wherever you want. Also you will know how to back them up without having to buy backup programs which then consume all your disk space backing up files you don't want...

Just a thought.

It surely is.

It is probably the simplest way for an owner to take control of their computer, but in my experience it is the worst taught or even overlooked altogether. There were software companies which made a small fortune offering their programs to keep things in order for us.

Thank you Suff and WM. Have printed off the information and will have a go at posting some on the Photo board.
When I down load photos from my camera I rename the file as it usually just shows the date. So I have jumped the first hurdle.
May have to come back for more advice if I have any problems
