The router has a broken board. If you move it the router resets but it's not in the cable or the socket.

I'd guess the fracture on the board has also broken the DSL line internally.

In the end it was the router. As soon as I plugged one of mine in, it saw the DSL and reported.

Then the Sky admins told me they could not divulge the DSL username and password as they don't have it..... Ria decided to sign for another year and get the free router and didn't want me to go and get my mobile so I could get onto Google and hack the router to get the login details.

She'll be online again early next week at home.

Ria, you're welcome. I have little to do in the evenings and am local. So why not, it's not difficult for me and we all try to help. Plus I was fed a lovely meal and watered. :D

It was all pointing to the router, but I suppose that we have to go through all the checks and not divert from the ISP's techie scripts.

I am with TalkTalk and their system suits me. They do allow customers to use their own equipment, so I have my D-Link and not their flimsy piece of kit, also D-Link. The password - login pair comes in a separate letter similar to the way PIN codes are sent.

Anyway, all's well that ends well.

Well there is no point in renewing if it really is a line fault.

Result in the end though.

woop wooop.... got home and there was a grey box shape by my front door. My new router has arrived; only no longer referred to as a router but rather a Sky Hub :? but who cares; I'm back in the cyber world :kick: :kick: :kick: :kick: :kick: :kick: :kick:

LOL, thanks Frank.... as a matter of interest; is there a difference between a Hub and a Router? I know this one can plug into a SkyHD box (which I don't have) but basically they do the same thing right?

Ria, in the old days a hub was just that: a hub. Data packets would come in on one port and be made available to all the other ports - everyone could see everything. There were also switches. These were a bit more clever than hubs in that they could decide which port(s) the packet could go out of - only those in the "need to know" got the info. Routers did as similar job as switches, but between different networks. And it was possible to mix and match hubs and switches on a network.

A Sky Hub appears to be a sort of aggregation point for broadband and Sky+ HDTV, with a few bells and whistles to separate the two. It's a wireless N router with four Ethernet ports and is really not much more than a router with a TV point under a trade name.

By hub they are talking media hub rather than networking hub. The connection place for all your media.

A bit like ATM... The number of ways those three letters are used causes total confusion...
