They are not a vanishing breed, as us that are in the system know. How do you know they are hard to find Suff? When did you last go looking for a social worker?

Well I guess it's a local problem to where I was living. But, from the news (yes I know it's always senstationalised), not only where I was living.

I read, I listen to what people say, I read their rationalisation and I read what is being done up and down the country.

To encourage the right sort of people the language is wrong, the actions are wrong and the process for following up miscarriages of justice are just plain ludicrous.

Granted it's all in my opinion and I'm not in the "business" so to speak. But I know, from my own extensive experience of building and leading teams to do work, that the rhetoric coming from the organisation will not build the teams and practises required to do a good quality job.

There will always be people who exceed all expectations. Who put themselves out there far and above the terms of the job. But, in my experience these people are exceptions to the rule.

My personal experience tells me the system is not working. My "rhetoric" radar tells me that it's not being fixed.

Which is why I say what I do. Not popular I know, but it's how I feel and I don't mean to offend.

You didn't offend at all, please don't think that, I find it interesting to 'hear' what other people think.

I suppose I have seen it from both angles. When Luke was younger we always had a social worker, some ok, some good and some brilliant, but none rubbish. Now I see it from my husbands side and he has yet to work with a colleague that didn't go that extra mile. Neither on his placements did he ever see bad practice.

I bet that's true.

I wish they would make it harder to become a 'carer' But that would be a whole new thread.
My son's girlfriend works in an old peoples home and is a wonderful caring loving girl. Unfortunately some of the other 'carers' are not so good. Nothing dreadful going on, just a lack of compassion at times.

I'm quite forceful with my opinion and it can be abrasive at times. I try to be aware of it.

My ex adored my brother and because of that she started as a volunteer in a home for those with learning difficulties. She liked it so much that she put herself (our money) through BTEC in Health and Social Care to Level 5. When it was announced that DipSW was to fold she took the relevant modules to gain a BSW and from there did a PQ in advanced social work practice and management.

The problem, as she still sees it, is that a lot of DipSWs and CQSWs had already risen high up the food chain, along with their outdated practices, and were resistant to continuation training. They would attend to get the right ticks in the right boxes for their careers, but their methods remained - you can't teach old dogs new tricks.

It is going to take a while for the dinosaurs to become extinct.

That is does WM. My husband had to do year at college doing an Access course, then a 3 year degree. Luckily thanks to my mum leaving me her house, which we sold to pay off the mortgage and having a disabled son we could afford for him to do the degree full time. I know other people take 6 years to qualify
