The New Year's Gongers List.

Postby Workingman » 29 Dec 2012, 14:44

The usual suspects: Those doing well paid jobs, Slebs, retired MPs, wives of ex Prime Ministers.... and, of course, The Olympians. All of them already well rewarded.

Time to call a halt.

I don't think honours should be dished out to civil servants and government officials, but I think it is good when ordinary people who have given their time to help their community get recognition.

That's the principle, yes, but the practice is less admirable. You will not see many Knights/Dames or C.B.Es given to the "other" ranks.

I could see the point of an Honours list back in the days when Knights were bold.

The King:- "Sir Oz, thou hast saved me; that ill intentioned knave wast just about to give me a right hander with yon axe. Prithee, have half of Buckinghamshire and an Earldom".

Sir Oz:- "Cheers your Maj; don't mind if I do!"

But not these days. The honours system is well past it's sell by date. "Sir" Elton John? "Sir" Paul McCartney? Time to call a halt.
