That was the impression I got. My suspicious side is always roused when no names are given but that "xyz has learned" or "someone close to ... said".

That's the problem aggers - it is wide open to interpretation (or misinterpretation)..
But if you say "We are only concerned with the medical issues" it's clear cut. This is the problem, here is what we think is the solution.
But when you say we must consider "wider societal issues" you are immediately into "Is it worth putting any effort into this person who statistically has only x years left" territory. (Imo).
If anyone has that point of view OK, I don't mind. What I do mind is the way that no-ones name is ever attached to this opinion. If they believe it, then say it.

Ah well.as I suspected it would be ." ASSISTED SUICIDE NOW APPROVED." Another foot in the grave.. Pathway is still alive and well.
