Phone advice

I have a 7 month old Samsung Galaxy Ace phone. I really like it and have a few apps on it, a couple I installed myself and some that were already on it. I also have an SD card inserted.

Since I d/l the last app, I keep getting messages saying I don't have enough memory I asked at the phone shop yesterday and was advised to transfer some of the apps to the SD card but I don't know how to do this. I don't use a lot of the apps that were already on the phone but it doesn't look like I can uninstall them anyway

Can anyone advise please?

Before you Uninstall, do "Clear data". That will also delete the app data from the internal phone memory.

Would it be ok to delete stuff that was there when I got it, like a Factory Setting type thing? I do and have used Google Maps for example but I don't use the google email service, although I can't get it to accept my yahoo email. I tend to read emails on the lappie anyway

I don't have the phone Gal, but from what I was reading if an app is part of the operating system you cannot delete it - the delete button is greyed out.... that is unless you do something called "rooting" your phone and that would void any guarantee and is not always successful. Some apps can be moved to the SD card to gain memory, though.

I'll look for easy instructions and get back.

Sorry Gal, but as your phone is still under guarantee all I can find - safe methods - are from Menu go to settings>applications>manage apps>'move to sd'... as well as the previous info.

If that isn't working, or freeing up memory, all the other ways I have found involve rooting your phone or using third-party (spurious) software - a deal breaker with Samsung at the very least.

I have a Samsung slider and I have to say that Samsung's phone manager software (and website) are rubbish. They appear to have the system that it is their way or no way.

Thanks WM, I have managed to delete those apps that were delete-able and it seems to have freed up some more memory at least.

I can't see a way to move an app to SD though....

Hi Gal,

WM is correct, to uninstall apps which are bundled with your phone you need to root the phone and then you also need a root uninstaller for the more stubborn apps (facebook/twitter). This is something I did on my Huawei phone but then I needed to crack it to remove the simlock so I didn't care.

I also looked up the moving to SD card and found this on a Vodafone forum.

If you go to Manage Apps under settings, are there options within the individual apps to move them to the card? This is the normal way of doing it. It's not possible with all apps.

I don't recommend that you root the phone or use root uninstallers unless you are very comfortable with your phone.

Yup, I think that I would leave it and make do.

If you are on a contract Gal, you are probably near to a free upgrade. If you own it the guarantee runs out soon, then might be the time to have a play.

Nope, not till I've had it for two years.

As I said further up I have managed to delete some of the unused apps anyway which has freed up some data storage - thanks for the comments xx
