Something a bit different ....

Postby TheOstrich » 24 May 2014, 19:29

The Ostrich, a non-league soccer and grass-roots rugby union fan, attended his first rugby league game in (I reckon) 29 years this afternoon! 8-) My last visit to watch league was at Widnes back in 1984 or 1985.

Had to brush up on Wiki as to how the points scoring worked before I went. And thankfully a guy sitting near me in the stand took pity on me and explained some of the more esoteric rules such as the "40-20" ..... :?

It was a NCL Division 3 game between the Coventry Bears and Woolston Rovers (from Warrington), played at the home of Coventry RUFC, the Butts Arena, which is a 12 minute stroll from the railway station. The home side won it relatively easily once they'd got their noses in front, the final score was 28-8 and I enjoyed it, although there was a lot of poor handling and fumbled catches - but that was down to the playing conditions, a rain-soaked pitch and a greasy ball. May be taking in a few more matches this summer ..... :D

As someone who used to play, the 20 - 40 rule baffles me..
