50-60 MPs from Tory and Labour jumping ship is a recipe for more chaos than we now have.

Going to the one trick pony that is UKIP would be suicide. The sole reason for UKIP's existence has gone. I predict that it, too, will disappear within a few elections.

Well that depends on how you look at it.

If you believe that the job of UKIP was to get us a vote, then you are right. If, however, you believe that the job of UKIP is to enact the vote, force the leave and then ensure the UK gets a good deal and a workable exit, as I do; then the UKIP job has only just begun....

As I've said about the EU, the government is not fit for purpose and it will have to be totally destroyed before it can be re-made in a mould which works. I believe we are about to realise that the same is true of the UK government.

Chaos? We've seen nothing yet. I wonder who will blink first. Those who want to run away from the challenge and hide in the wings of the broken and undemocratic EU, where the commission is now talking about forcing the rest of the EU to take the Euro? Or those who believe we need to do what has to be done to get the best deal for the UK in the entire world....

Time will tell.

I notice that, step by step, the value of the pound is clawing it's way back against the Euro. Three steps forward two steps back. But as this drags on the markets will remember that they are there to make money, that nothing is changing this month or this next 6 months and that the UK economy and the UK businesses are one of the strongest in the world and one of the best places to make money.

It's been 3 working days. If it's still chaos in 3 months then we'll have legitimate cause to complain.

How on earth can UKIP force the leave when it doesn't, and probably never will, have anyone on the negotiation team. It is a numbers game and UKIP does not have the numbers in places of power.

Where I do agree is with the change of mindset in government and politicians. There has been an undercurrent of dislike, bordering on hatred, of our MPs. The referendum gave many people a chance to stick one to government and politicians and they took it big time.

It is now time for those in power to do the people's wishes. The electorate has become rather fractious and impatient and will remove MPs who are only in it for themselves.

UKIP depends very heavily on Nigel Farage, whose personality seems to carry the party. If he went under a bus tomorrow UKIP would be in trouble. But the old politics seem to be breaking up and no one has much of a clue as to what happens next.

Which is the job of the electorate. They were encouraged to forget that...

I am quite sure that none of this will lead to any "surge" in support for Ukip. The beneficiaries of this current farce will undoubtedly be the Liberal Democrats.

Not that I would ever be inclined to vote for them, mind you ... :)

UKIP were burning up the Labour votes and pushing Labour margins at the last election. In 3 way split seats enough Tories and Labour disaffected could easily tip the balance. There were at least 60 or 70 seats in that category. If they had the GE again tomorrow, after what has just passed, how would we see those voters voting????

Especially as all those voters who voted Leave, who were expected to toe the party line, were assumed to have done so to stick one in the eye of the incumbents. Feelings are high and that attitude won't have worn off that quickly. I keep harping back to the damage done to the Scottish Labour and Lib Dems by Indyref. But it is entirely valid. No sane politician (is there such a thing), would want an election right now from any party other than UKIP....

I agree with Ossie.

The main reason for UKIP to exist was to force the winner of the last election to give an in/out referendum on the EU. That was achieved. It was then going to campaign for out/Leave and to leave has also has been achieved.

What does it now stand for?

It might be able to pressure for some things to be included in the negotiations, but it has no real power. Its days are numbered IMHO.

If the Parliamentary Labour Party want to chuck their teddies out of the pram, let them. Are they all going to leave the Labour party and form another one? They will vanish if they do - where's the SDP these days?

Well well. Yvette and her motley crew are trying to see if they can hijack the "Labour" brand. Because they know that if they stand as anything else in an election they will be toast.

We vote tribally in England and a lot of people still have loyalty to the Labour party. Which is why the rebels want the name.

So, New Labour Blairites want a divorce and want the family silver as well as the house and children.

If I was Jezza it would be: "Go, form your new party, you already have a name 'New Labour', resign from Labour, stand down and create 172 by-elections.

It would be fair and democratic. The voters could then decide.

I suspect that many of them would be thrown out.
