I want to scream

Postby meriad » 19 Aug 2016, 08:21

Last November we hired a new receptionist; young girl called Hannah. She's 21 reminds me quite a bit of myself when I first started work and we really thought things would work out well with her. Our receptionist role is a perfect one for a first time jobber as it has the scope to do a bit of team secretarial as well as office management - if you want to. But regardless there are some minimum specs that front role has always done.

As the time has gone by H has done less and less and we've had to pull her up a few times. We've had to ask two three times for something to be done, then ask again and then it finally would get done.

Anyway; H has now resigned - last day is next week Friday. And I'm astounded at the reason she's given "bored and not enough to do!". Seriously :o If she'd done what we'd been asking in the first place we would have happily given her more to do; but we just knew it wouldn't get done.

For the last two weeks I have been asking her to make sure that before she leaves all the stationery is sorted and stocked up; the toner cartridges for the printers are all ordered so we don't have to worry about it for the next few weeks. My 2 weeks holiday starts the same time as she's gone, leaving only my other colleague. We've hired a temp to cover the phones and deal with meetings but other colleague Hanna (without the H ;) ) will have enough on her plate without having to worry about things like stationery and toner. And it's still not done.

One of the first things H is meant to do every morning is restock the printers - not been done

And then when I said to her that I cannot do her job as well as mine and Hanna's and for her to please just focus (and yes I know she's leaving and doesn't care anymore) I just got this blank sarcastic look from her.

Sigh.... nothing we can do to change things now but just needed to vent!

grrrrrr

Just scream it will do you good or deep breaths and count to 10 :cute:
Hope when you get a new permanent receptionist she will be older and super efficient

That's a problem Saundra, our company isn't doing too well at the moment and quite a few changes are being made. One of them is that reception is most likely not going to be replaced (in the near future at least). Had H been good and stayed on she wouldn't have been made redundant, but now that she's resigned she will not be replaced.

Oh well, fun times ahead for colleague Hanna and I - but at least the two of us work well as a team (have the odd hic up but who doesn't) and generally just get on with what needs doing.

It's so annoying Ria. I used to have people working for me who would leave you thinking that you might as well save your breath, not bother to ask them and do the job yourself instead. They'd put more effort into dodging doing jobs than actually doing them - and then, like Hannah, have the nerve to say that they were bored!

Hopefully things will improve in the future and the position will be filled again.

Very annoying  So many young people want to start on big money without doing the necessary work - whatever happened to working your way up? Miss Osc has had similar problems.

Blurdi Yell, Ria!

With jobs being so tight one would think that new workers would put in a little effort, but apparently not.

I hope that her leaving will not overload you and Hanna (without the H) in what sounds like an already stressful situation.

Do try to stay calm. (((Ria)))

No doubt you will give her a very good reference.
Was she any good at making tea/coffee.
If you want a replacement, I am free. Will work for the minimum wage.
There are a lot of people who do not want to work yet want a lot of money for doing nothing.

Grrrrr Ria, she doesn't sound like much of a loss - except for the fact that she won't be replaced, so it will put more work onto you and your colleague :?
