You know that smell we all love after a rainstorm, especially a thundery one in a heatwave.... as if we ever have any of those damned things?
Well there is science behind it.
The scent is real and is called petrichor and it comes from bacteria living in the soil and on plants. The bacteria go dormant when it is dry but once the water hits they go bananas and give of geosmin and when it mixes with air we love it.
You can now proclaim "Ah, petrichor" in complete safety after a downpour.
