Well, it is not as if the chickens are being injected with chlorine. They are washed in a dilution of 20-50 parts per million of chlorine:water. Chlorine is also in tap water and swimming pools and we do not appear to be so wound up by that.
What concerns me is why the process is used in the first place, and that comes down to animal welfare and therefore costs. The EU has minimum standards for such things as drinkers, feed, litter, ventilation and light. Where the US has minimum standards they are much lower than in the EU and this leads to (potential) problems with Salmonella and Campylobacter.
At least we have the choice from caged hens through to organic - you pays your money...
