Debih, so glad to hear that you are much more protected than you were. And as ex-mil I do understand that small teams working in harmony can be much more effective than large scale operations, even if the small ones do look to be a bit OTT from an operational / bureaucratic POV.

Deb, can you confirm what you know on this score? I was also called for the vaccine about 3 weeks ago, but having discussed it with the nursing staff at work, I declined for the following reasons:-

You can still contract Covid after being vaccinated but you will be either very mildly affected or more likely asymptomatic.

My thinking was that as I am still working, still shopping, still seeing Tim's mum and Luke, being an asymptomatic spreader was more worrying that having some symptoms testing and isolating. If I had any health concerns I would have had it, but I dont, so for the greater good I declined.

This does explain to me why they are vaccinating the elderly in care homes and not the staff and families, as basically the vaccine protects the receiver not the larger community. Obviously this will come as they work down the tiers or recipients. When mine is due then I am happy to have it.

Has any of that been relayed to you too?

Yes. By both the GP’s at the surgery and at the vaccination point yesterday.

They explained that if we get it our symptoms should be milder or non existent but we could still spread so we should still socially distance and wear masks.

But because, if I do get it, my symptoms will be milder I am much less likely to need hospital treatment, this relieving the pressure on the NHS and hospitals. If I do get symptoms I still need to test and isolate. But if I’m asymptomatic then obviously I won’t know - but that’s no different to the thousands of people who are currently asymptomatic.

I suppose the mask wearing and socially distancing will continue to happen until enough of the population have been vaccinated.

Around here they are vaccinating social care staff. My sister, who works in a residential home had hers last week at the same time the residents did. And Lucy, who works in the community has been contacted by her employer to see if she wants it. I believe they have done almost all the care homes in our area and are now starting on the housebound. Family are having to wait their turn.

Fab news Debih. And agree that it will run smoother (and safer) with a few more people to monitor and administer.

fingers crossed it's as smooth for everyone else x

And Shell, interesting points and agree with you

Thanks Ria. We have been asked if we will consider volunteering at the vaccination hub at the weekend, if we do we are guaranteed a vaccine. I have said I will anyway, and if the twice weekly flow tests, I am supposed to be having materialise then I will agree to be vaccinated. At least then I feel I can protect myself and not risk my vulnerable family. Tim is already doing twice weekly flow tests

I find it a bit of a minefield to be honest I'm isolated since last March
I'm classed as vulnerable and yet I'm eligible for the vaccine
But even if I have it I won't be going out or change my life style and now I read it won't stop me getting it altho at a lesser degree in confused to be honest

I'm off for the vaccine

It means if you do get it Saundra that you are less likely to be very poorly with it.

I suppose it’s about like wearing a cycling helmet. It’s not going to stop you coming off your bike - it’s just giving you extra protection if you do.

In my opinion you need to have it even if you are isolating and won’t make any immediate difference to your life. The more people that have it, the more of the population will be covered and we can eventually get back to normal.

That’s a great explanation, Debih, thank you. Because of our age, I suppose we are further up the vaccination list than many people, although that could still mean it might be March or April before we get the jab. I’m not sure if we will get called over here, I’m waiting for a week or two to ask in the chemist where we got our regular flu injection.
