The DM article is the most pathetic bunch of (un) researched news I've seen in a while.

Power companies are lobbying to block or shuffle EV charging during peak periods. 5-7pm being one, I would assume 06:30 - 08:30 being another.

The DM article which SCREAMS that the charging will be turned off for NINE HOURS, admits that it is more likely that 30 minute time shifting and delayed start will be put in place for 5-7pm peak usage.

It is typical of the poor journalism on anything to do with climate change or climate change mitigation. It is, however, perfect for making large portions of the population believe that there is NO POWER to charge EV's. At any time you know.

These things will go away over time and more responsible reporting will win out in the end.

Now there was me thinking that Grant Shapps was Transport Secretary and that it is he who has already introduced the legislation and also lodged it with the WTO.

The news is in many outlets, inc The Times, and not just the DM.

But let's stick with the glossy brochure stuff that EVs are brill and that there are no downsides to running one. There, sorted.

<sigh>

Charging points for electric cars will be preset to turn off for NINE HOURS a day amid fears they will cause blackouts if government hits target for phasing out petrol and diesel

Charging points for electric cars will be preset to turn off for nine hours a day

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is said to be anxious that huge numbers of drivers will plug in their car when they return home between 5pm and 7pm.

Under regulations lodged with the World Trade Organisation, new chargers in the home and workplace will by default not operate from 8am to 11am and 4pm to 10pm.

Owners will be able to override the preset times, to take account of night workers and people who have different schedules.

Public chargers and rapid chargers, on motorways and A-roads, will be exempt.

Headline which does not match the hype. AGAIN. Yes they will be PRESET. Yes it will be NINE HOURS, but it won't be nine hours in a block. NO public fast chargers will not be included.

This can also be achieved by doubling or trebling the cost of EV charging electric during the same times. However it makes sense that the peak periods are blocked out by default and that most charging will happen at times with higher supply unless the owner chooses to prioritise other charging times.

This is not a BAD thing nor a BLOCKING thing. This is simply pure bloody common sense. We are increasing the load on a grid which can be utilised over a staggered time in order to balance demand and supply. It is the future of our grid usage yet it is sold as some kind of shrieking horror story headline.

Done!

If you keep sighing it will eventually lead to a sharp intake of breath. That will probably be when the chancellor wants to claw back the VED, fuel duty and the VAT on the fuel duty they have lost from FF, and all the bribes they paid to get you to buy into the idea. They are going to get it from somewhere no matter how long you deny it. It won't happen till the day because to announce it sooner would kill the 100% EV idea. Never mind, keep looking at the pretty photos in the glossies.

I wonder what "normal" people would call it if the government prevented them from using their dish washers, washing machines, irons, kettles, ovens and the likes for nine hours a day?

The chancellor has already started clawing back his VED. Go look at a +£40k vehicle with poor CO2 emissions. £1,300 per year for a vehicle which, sold 5 years ago, would be £300.

As for dish washers, washing machines, irons kettles etc.... The grid was designed for these and there has been no real shift in that grid. So it is not a real comparison.

Now if you want to talk home heating.... Off 18 hours a day because it consumes at least twice and EV.... Now that is a Real comparison.. I wonder what they would say to that??

Nice body swerve, strawmen and deflection - just ignore the problem.

Do keep looking over your shoulder through those rose tinted spectacles though, because the bogey wo/man chancellor is coming for you EVers for the missing £s; it's not going away.

S/He is not going to be able to get it from ordinary people through raising their necessary electricity prices for heating, lighting, cooking, washing and cleaning. etc. You lot are the only golden egg there is.

It is not a swerve or misdirection.

Quoting existing use of the grid was a misdirection.

The hole in the finances is about £40bn, at today's prices. It will have to be filled.

My version is smart meters. One tariff for domestic use and one for EV charging. If they can turn you off for nine hours a day they can detect when you are drawing power for a charge. Public chargers will then charge a commercial rate plus a "claw back" element.

And your solution is.....?
