Yes, it's dirty, but we need to do something to end this version of Conservatism.

They need the SNP and the SNP price will be some form of separation which gives the Tories way more power in Westminster. PR didn't make things better in Hollyrood, it made things less certain and left power with the politicians and not the people. The only democracy that works the way everyone expects it to is direct democracy. But if you have direct democracy you don't need much of a government because the people themselves are directly involved.

This is not very popular with the people, they want someone else to do the dirty work then complain about how they didn't "get a vote" every time something contentious happens.

If it is what the people want, fine. But they really should want it because the second it is implemented the politicians will never allow that much power to be removed from them again.

Kaz +1

If Lab/LibDems get enough seats the SNP are not needed, but having them onside would be a bonus.

Politicians always get the power be it via PR or FPTP or even direct deomocracy (the legislaure still holds most power). At least with PR the majority of those who can be bothered to vote get some sort of representation, unlike with FPTP. PR is obviously not what some anti-democrats want, which is why it is so good.

Well I remember the 1970's, 87% higher rate tax, wealth leaving the country, Rolls Royce aero going bust, 32% base tax for everyone over the threshold, 23% inflation, the labour government running to the IMF for a loan because we ran out of money, constant strikes, rubbish on the streets, power only so many days a week, sitting in the dark with a paraffin lamp.

I remember 50% unemployment in FIFE For a decade because the lunatics from Scargill shut down the pumps on the mines that ran under the Forth and they all flooded, never to be re-opened.

I recall 15% mortgage rates (although I never paid more than 12.5%), the catastrophe this caused with home owners, especially first time buyers of council properties who bought because the mortgage was less than rent but didn't have the resources to survive the ERM shenanigans and the rate setting which grew up around it. Huge numbers of homes lost to repossession.

Yep, I remember things a LOT darker than they are now.

Employment is high, unemployment is low, yes mortgage rates are rising and this is going to cause a problem. But nothing like we have seen before. Energy prices are rising but nothing like we saw in the 1970's and the government will intervene as we have seen. Unions are still blocked from making a crisis out of a drama and, in general, the whole country is being buffeted by the winds of change. We, as a country, have stood in the arms of hurricanes in terms of adversity.

The main change is 24x7 news.

Erm, that was the 70s, this is now, and your version is not quite correct. Try to look forwards.

OK, the floor is yours, let's hear your version of democracy and equality for all.

Mine is something of the NZ type, look it up.

At present in the UK most of us live urban lives yet most MPs are from rural constituencies. That's not right. Minimum payment jobs are the majority and some people need two of them to survive, happy with that?

Would you partake?

So, you have no solutions to our present problerms, a bit like our government: well done you.

The £ and the economy tanks because of Con policy and you think that's good.

Even the OAPs in the shires will wake up to this one day. We all, except the rich and hedge fund managers (Mogg and Redwood, Brexiteers but with funds in the EU), will lose.

You know what, I was an adult in the seventies and there were no food banks, and hardly any rough sleepers. Plenty of council housing, not people having to pay exorbitant rents for substandard housing to private landlords with almost no security of tenure. Things have altered for many, for the worst. Not reams of “facts and figures” like you always produce, just real people scraping a living from zero contract or minimum wage jobs, having to claim benefits and/or use food banks to feed their families. You did know that most benefit claimants are actually in work? People waiting forever for routine operations, or lying on the floor for hours waiting for an ambulance? People with chest pain being advised to get to hospital by car because it will be quicker? These things are happening right now, and they didn’t happen then - end of!
